Re: F2 and F3 Brightness Keys Not Working on DM4-3050US Laptop

I deleted the deyboard via device manager and updated the bios, but unfortunately that did not solve the problem.

Re: F2 and F3 Brightness Keys Not Working on DM4-3050US Laptop

I have the same exact problem. Sometimes F2-F3 start working but overall their operation is very unreliable. Also a note to outsourced HP guys: I'm a very competent computer engineer so I have tried everything and searched google before posting this, so please don't even try your usuall useless "uninstall/reset and reinstall everything or make sure that the keys are in Fn mode" recommendations!

So far I'm very disappointed with HP's quality of service.

Re: F2 and F3 Brightness Keys Not Working on DM4-3050US Laptop

I had the exact same problem F2 and F3 did not working but everything else did. I was searching around going crazy to find a solution but I could not find anything that worked so finally I decided to try and restart it to see if that helped. My computer turned back on and now my brightness keys work perfectly fine.

Hoped I helped! :smileyhappy:

Re: F2 and F3 Brightness Keys Not Working on DM4-3050US Laptop

I had this problem with my HP laptop and solved it by plugging the power cord in and out.  For some reason, when I unplugged the power cord, my screen dimmed to conserve power and I was able to adjust the brightness again using the F keys.  Odd...

Re: F2 and F3 Brightness Keys Not Working on DM4-3050US Laptop

Hi to everyone on this thread, I need a few pieces of information from each of you, then we may be able to see a pattern.

1. Would you please post your Product number please, it should be inside the Battery Bay, on mine it's over to the right side under the serial number.

I don't want to presume you all have the exact same model, we need to be certain.
Please don't post your serial numbers.

2. Please post your BIOS version, you can see that in Windows by holding down the "fn" key and pressing the "esc" key.
Or you can see it in HP Support Assistant, or if you boot into the BIOS.

3. Do your other action keys work on the top row? Like your volume keys?

4. Do you have it set so you just have to press the action key for the volume or screen brightness by itself or do you have it set to where you have to press the "fn" key and then the action key?
It can be set both ways.

5. Did you always have the issue from when you first used it out of the box?

If not when did you first notice the issue.

6. I notice different people have put in things that worked for them, so if you have a step, or a couple of steps that then enables the brightness keys to work please list them in your reply along with all the information requested above.

I know this sounds like a lot to ask for but it will help us in seeing any pattern with the issue.

BTW I am testing now on a  dm4-3007xx Beats Edition,

1. Product number is A7V22AS#ABA.
2. My BIOS version is F.07

3. all my action keys work including my brightness keys

4. mine are set so I just have to press the action key by itself

5. mine does not have the issue.

6. Does not apply as I don't have the issue.

Thank you.

Re: F2 and F3 Brightness Keys Not Working on DM4-3050US Laptop

1. A6X73UA#ABA

2.  F.0A (by the way, if it helps at all, pressing Fn and Esc did not do anything - I had to go to the Support Assistant).

3.  Yes - all other action keys seem to work fine.

4.  It is currently set so that I only have to press the action key for the action - I do not have to press the Fn key for the action.  This was reset to the current state when my BIOS was updated by Support Assistant last week (I wish it hadn't done so, but it did).  Prior to the most recent BIOS update last week, I had that functionality reversed so that Fn was needed for the action.

5.  At this point, I don't recall the brightness keys ever working, even out of the box, though I am sure that was not something I would have checked for right away.

6.  N/A

Re: F2 and F3 Brightness Keys Not Working on DM4-3050US Laptop

Thank you jammb1, I appreciate it, we will have to wait for a few more replies to see if there is a pattern.

But I should be able to help you with your action keys so you can put it back so you do have to press "fn" as well.
(it sounded to me like that is how you would like it, please correct me if I got it wrong)

Just start from powered off and tap the "f10" key while booting up and go into the BIOS.

Then use the arrow keys to go to "system configuration"

In that menu you will see "Action keys mode" change the status to disabled by using the "f5" & "f6" keys, then hit "f10" to save and exit.
