I talked to customer service about this OpenGL news and they are working on it so I am told. Have a look at the log:
[Sunday, 17 July 2011 3:11 PM] -- Denise J says:
The graphic manufacture are yet to release the compatible drivers which would support Open GL application. However, HP is working with the graphic card manufacturer for the release of the drivers.
[Sunday, 17 July 2011 3:12 PM] -- Customer says:
Are they really? Are they actually doing something? Or is that just talk? The link I posted to you (the first one) did not provide evidence that the problem is being fixed.
[Sunday, 17 July 2011 3:12 PM] -- Customer says:
It sounded rather conclusive that the computer would not support openGL
[Sunday, 17 July 2011 3:14 PM] -- Denise J says:
I kind of know how you feel.
[Sunday, 17 July 2011 3:14 PM] -- Denise J says:
Yes, as I explained they are working towards releasing the latest drivers and once they are released you would be notified with the update to update your graphic card drivers and that should fix the issue.
[Sunday, 17 July 2011 3:14 PM] -- Customer says:
Do you know how long this will be?
[Sunday, 17 July 2011 3:16 PM] -- Denise J says:
Since there are many complains about this issue and customers are waiting for the update which is releasing the soon. Since , we need AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver and Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver which can be support Open GL application.
[Sunday, 17 July 2011 3:17 PM] -- Customer says:
So you can definitely confirm that these new drivers will enable FULL OPENGL support for the 6770M?
[Sunday, 17 July 2011 3:17 PM] -- Denise J says:
Yes.
[Sunday, 17 July 2011 3:18 PM] -- Denise J says:
I assure that.
[Sunday, 17 July 2011 3:18 PM] -- Customer says:
Okay thank you very much.

Don't hold your breath...
I am honestly hopeful that it will get fixed in a driver update, but I'm not sure I can afford to wait. I don't want to keep my dv6 if it's never going to work with OpenGL, and I have a limited time to return it...

I'd return it. Get the refund, and in the meantime if you can afford to and like the laptop otherwise and want to give HP another chance (ugh), buy a new one with the 30% coupon. You'll get the same savings and extend the time that you might see a fix. However, can't say if 21 days later you will see a solution.

Well both of them confirmed my hopes. I wouldn't imagine they would have been told to say it if it weren't true, even despite HP's apparantly apathetic viewpoint.

[Monday, July 18, 2011 12:29 AM] -- -xxx says:
There still isn't a fix. I just want to know if this will be fixed in the future.
[Monday, July 18, 2011 12:30 AM] -- Larry S says:
Yes, the testing is being performed by our research department we are expecting the update very soon.
[Monday, July 18, 2011 12:30 AM] -- xxx says:
Ok
[Monday, July 18, 2011 12:31 AM] -- Larry S says:
Once we have any update it will be listed in HP.com for the same notebook models.
Idk, it took alot of nagging to get to that point and he used veeerrry careful wording throughout.

HP may simply be trying to keep customers from returning their laptops by promising a fix. For those of you that are gamblers, you go ahead and keep yours. Just don't complain if HP fails to deliver a fix any time soon.
