you also need to change your computer's video output to hdmi. I don't have a Envy laptop, but in general it is usually fn and F4 key to change video from laptop screen to hdmi.
Change your sound output if you want sound from your TV.
hope this helps.

First of all, I would check to make sure the hdmi cable and hdmi port of the TV works by plugging it into a DVD/blue ray player or any known good source of hdmi device.
If the TV's hdmi input works, then when you press fn & f4, does the internal display of the notebook blanks out? try lowering the resolution of the computer to match the TV, sometime if the screen resolution is set too high. the TV might have problem handling it.

Can you extend the display using the procedure in this youtube video?

I want to check to make sure the PC can detect and output to the TV via hdmi.

Please correct me if I am wrong, I presumed you are running Windows 7 64 bit. I would try to download and install the latest graphics driver from www.hp.com. The latest driver has support for switchable graphics, Catalyst Control Center and hdmi audio driver for supported notebook .

Perhaps one last try before giving up? On you computer, make sure the output to the TV is not greater than 1280 x 720 resolution and a monitor refresh rate of 60 hertz.
