HP Mediasmart DVD freezes

hi,

So I tried watching a Blu-ray the other night, but it wouldnt play, would only pop up with "want to check for updates? yes/no". Saying both yes and no gave me dead ends. looked on the forum, found similar problems, tried downloading the DVD10 and uninstalling mediasmart. Still wasnt able to watch a dvd. So i did a restore to the previous day, Mediasmart DVD was back, DVD10 was gone. Tried a different Blu-ray (The Departed) and wouldnt play still. So today I have been downloading, uninstalling, shutting down and reinstalling Mediasmart SP53390 Vers 4.2.2.5122. The program would start automatically from BD insertion, but would appear to freeze on the loading of the movie.

I have also downloaded CCleaner and ran it after uninstalling twice, but that was only today. And I ran it until it came up clean.

Have a HP DV7-3165DX on W7 64bit

Re: HP Mediasmart DVD freezes

Could be the Blu-ray lens is faulty or your any-virus is blocking some files, either the Blu-ray itself and/or the software in both Media Smart DVD and DVD10. Maybe something simple like a dirty lens, start there first.

 Uninstall your anti virus software, what ever that may be and also any third party firewall program you may be running (eg Comodo Firewall). Be sure to go to their respective web sites and use any of their tools that are needed to completely get rid of all traces.

 Restart ( you may want to go to Windows Access Centre at this point and shut off any annoying warnings that you're running your computer with out any anti-virus program).

 Run CCleaner registry cleaner as you did before until it finds nothing and restart.

 Uninstall Media Smart DVD and DVD10, run CCleaner same as before and restart.

 Make sure that you have not disabled Windows Media player and Windows Media Centre.

 Insert your Blu-ray and even though you have no software to play it, the title of the Blu-ray movie will show up in "Computer" under the DVD/BD ROM drive. If it doesn't then I would say the lens is no longer reading the movie.

 Use a movie that you know that played before.

 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

 If it sees the movie then install this trial of Total Media Theatre 5. Windows Firewall will block some files and you will get a message(s) for this _ allow them through. TMT 5 will ask you to restart your machine and upon opening the software Windows Firewall may still ask your permission, allow the files in.

 Please tell me if your movie plays. This is a new version of TMT5, it should play everything.

 http://www.arcsoft.com/totalmedia-theatre/

 In the link I provided, click on the free trial button and go no where else as you are running with out an ant-virus program.

 Save the file to the desk top and install from there, not from a temporary folder. This is important to save the file to the desk top first.

 One of the advantages of TMT 5 is that it's written from scratch, it does not rely on Microsoft Visual Packages for it to run. Microsoft Visual Packages are pr-written software that vendors use to save time when they write their programs. The problem here is that, other things affect them, like antivirus software.

 Let me know how things go and we will continue. :smileyhappy:

Re: HP Mediasmart DVD freezes

ah, so TMT5 works and plays blu-rays! Its just an expensive alternative. Is there anything else, or could the files for MS DVD be messed up on my comp? As a sidenote, I did notice the mediasmart downloads in my download folder, should i have deleted them as well? and would they be causing each one to mess up? I just realized now that they were sitting there this whole time. And thats also where I was getting the files from, I couldnt figure out how to save to the desktop without adding over 90 other icons to it

[ Edited ]

Before you condemn TMT 5 here is a coupon code for 50% off.           SOFTTMT5

 At check out, just copy and paste the code in the promotion box, or what ever they call it.

 I became so fed-up with Cyberlink and their products (for other reasons) that I just went out and bought TMT 5.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

 Yes, delete all the MS DVD files in your download folder too, they don't need to be there, I am not sure if that will make a real difference though.

 Also Power DVD 10 and maybe MS DVD creates a storage folder in "Documents" right click and delete anything you find there to do with MS DVD amd Power DVD10. There will also be one there for ArcSoft as well, leave that there for now.

 Here is the most recent version of DVD10.

 ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp56501-57000/sp56904.exe (if it won't install, let me know and I will tell you how to unpack the files to get it to install)

 When you click on the link pop-up will appear at the bottom of the screen (Internet Explorer 9). It will have 3 choices, RUN  SAVE  and  CANCEL

 Beside SAVE there is a drop down box arrow. Click on the arrow and select  SAVE AS. A new window will appear where you want to save it, in the left column look for DESK TOP at the top of that list. Click on that and select SAVE at the bottom right of that screen.

 You may get another pop-up saying that this file already exists, click on the REPLACE ALL button to resave it.

 Give it some time to download and install DVD10 from the desk top.

 After it installs RESTART. It will then become the default Blu-ray player over ArcSoft.

 For the first time playing _ Eject the DVD/Blu-ray drawer with the button on the drawer face itself. Load you movie and allow it to play automatically WITH OUT OPENING POWER DVD 10 _ give it some time.

 Hopefully it will work this time around.

 What is the movie you're trying to play and did you uninstall your anti-virus software or firewall ?  I am curious. :smileyhappy:

Re: HP Mediasmart DVD freezes

so I cleared everything off, left TMT5 installed, then tried downloading dvd10 again, popped in another bluray (casino royale), and it would only play through TMT5. Now, when I put in another bluray on Friday (Apollo 18) it didnt work, but it did say Apollo 18 on the disk drive (it came with a dvd copy as well and we watched it that way on the comp.) now on when i check it today, blurays come up in the drive named things like "logical volume". they still work through TMT5 though, just more info to see if it helps clearing it up

Re: HP Mediasmart DVD freezes

Go into programs and features and take a screen shot of your Microsoft Visual C++ packages there.

 I want you to delete the one associated with Power 10, but I want to make sure you delete the right one.

 They will be in a group like this.

 MVP C++.PNG

 If you're not going to answer my question whether or not you uninstalled your Virus program or not, then I won't continue.

 At least tell me what the program it is and what firewall you're running.

Re: HP Mediasmart DVD freezes

Uninstall your Norton again and the one with the red box around it. (see screen shot). Also DVD10. (in that order)

 Go through the drill again with CCleaner's registry cleaner.

 original.png

 The one in "Green" has a date of January 24, 2012, can you remember what you installed on that date ?

 Reinstall Power DVD10 from the link I gave you earlier and follow the instructions as before only this time go into "Auto Play" in the control panel and make sure that Power DVD10 is chosen for Blu-ray playback. If it isn't, choose and save the setting > restart and check and make sure the setting was saved.

 Try your movie again as before with out opening DVD10.

 It's important to uninstall your Norton before installing DVD10.

 If DVD10 works and you reinstall Norton and DVD10 stops working, we'll have to go into it's virus chest and find out what file(s) are being blocked.
