[ Edited ]

I just got this laptop a couple days ago. When i went to turn it on i notices on the left middle side of my screen that there were blotches of color. When i turn off the laptop i can still see where the blotches are on the screen. I dont know what it means or what to do. here is an image: Laptop Screen

I've had a few laptops over the years, and they've been dropped from time to time, so I've seen screens that look like yours.  It looks as if your screen is cracked right at the edge of it.  Depending on where you bought it, Best Buy for example, you may have a 2 week exchange policy if it's defective.  If it came out of the box with the screen like that, then it's definately defective.

I have a similar problem and my computer is on its way to HP to be checked out. The first dm4 I bought was defective out of the box. If I moved the lid the screen went crazy and it would crash. My replacement worked great and a few days after I got it I noticed that there was a mark on the black plastic frame on the top right side of the screen. It almost looked like a smudged fingerprint but would not come off. There was no shine to it and it looked like something that a paint thinner would do to a shiny surface. I was surprised that it got through quality control like that, but didn't think anything more about it. I've had it for a few weeks and had it sleeping with the lid closed, and when I opened the lid I noticed some white on the top of the screen. Anyway, each day it got worse with lines, etc...., until I couldn't see the screen any more. I was out of town, so had to wait to bring it back to Best Buy. The response from the Geek squad was that it would have to go to HP and that it was most likely caused by heat or dropping and the lcd was cracked and because I didn't buy the extra warranty I would probably be out around $500! I never buy extra warranties because I take really good care of things. I even bought a nice little HP padded case for the laptop and when not in use it was in it. It was never left in a hot car, was never near anything hot, and it was never dropped! It was expensive and I have treated it like a baby. Now I'm thinking that the mark on the frame has something to do with it, because that is where the crack thing started. HP was really nice on the phone and I am hoping that they find out what caused it and believe me when I say it didn't happen while I was in possession of it.

Please let me know what happens with yours and I'll do the same.

Thanks!!!
