I am having the exact same issues as you all! My computer finally quit working in September. It will work in Safe mode but thats it, I've restored it, and no success, I get the lines, grey broken up screen, and this system has also always run hot since I purchased it. Just thought it was normal. I bought a new laptop as I needed something reliable, and got a sony this time around, however it would be nice to get this one fixed right so that I can either have it as a back up or let my kids use it...its not like I have 1300 to keep buying a new laptop every year. this is ridiculous!

I bought the dv9910us in August of last year. Spent 850.00 on it. Yesterday the screen wouldn't come up. Works on a TV though. I called them and they gave me the runaround too. Said they can't even give me tips without paying for the customer service. What a freaking joke. It's not like people have that much money laying around all the time to spend every year on a new computer. HP's customer service is NOT what I would have expected from a company that aims at making decent products. I will never buy from them again. I will also be reporting it to the BBB for review. If it's a defective MB it IS their responsibility to correct the problem - and it seems that it's been happening quite frequently with this computer model. Everyone needs to keep posting until they add it to the defective list.

Same problem here. Bust video on DV9880ea (which is dv9700 series). About 15 months old. :-(
If you want to try upgrading from doorstop to useable pc then disabling the nvidia driver may work for you. For me it gives me a functioning laptop with no 3d acceleration / video out / hdmi / or movie playback. Not exactly great - but at least it meant I could carry on working while I searched for a solution.
Will ring HP tomorrow, but assuming that I will end up replacing the motherboard. Anyone suggestions on laptop cooling? So that this new mobo doesn't fail in a year? USB coolers seem underpowered to me.
Cheers all,
Jon

Same problem here with a dv9700t, display just went black one day 2 months out of warranty. Of course I'm getting the same crap from hp about it not being one of the effected chips. You know it's indviduals that make up a company and consequently the descisions, criminal in HP's case, that effect it's customer. Sony, Apple, Dell and others have all acknowledge the broad spectrum of systems this defect has effected and taken appropriate action for ALL their customers. I will never purchase an HP product again, and I'll do everything I can to make sure nobody else does. I know HP doesn't think this will trickle up to their corprate market but I can assure you, it will.

I grabbed and editted this from a forum about our rights:
You are legally protected if your product is:
faulty,
isn't as described or
is not of merchantable quality. (This means it's works described)
The warranty is a gaurantee in addition to your statutary rights - so when the warranty period has run out, you still have rights. If the warranty has run out, the retailer (and not the manufacturer) is still legally obliged to remedy the situation for you, and so the retailer should provide a repair, replacement or refund at no cost to you (assuming you can ascertain that the product was in one of those catagories above).
You have to be reasonable about how long you are covered for, but European legislation (Directive 99/44/EC) you can be sure that wherever you shop in Europe you have at least two years' protection.
So - in our case, we can suggest that the product we bought is not of merchantable quality as it has a high likelyhood of failing due to overheating. I shall be contacting the retailer today.

I signed up to post because my laptop has had the same problem. It started back in May, when it was a week out of warranty. First, I had to uninstall the video drivers because my computer wouldn't start up if I had the Nvidia 8600 drivers installed, so I had to use some generic graphics driver that came with Windows. The computer worked, but I couldn't do anything that required a video card. That was bad enough, but it wasn't bad enough for me to pay for the $400 dollar repair that they are asking for. This past weekend, though, the computer stopped booting up completely. Since I need my computer and wouldn't have felt right about having a useless $1000 laptop, I decided to call in a repair. The only problem is, they charged me twice for the repair. Once without taxes and then once with taxes. I'm just a student, so I don't have much money in the bank and now my account is overdrawn. I can't buy anything until this gets resolved, and HP is saying their system says they only charged me once. Let's hope they give me back my $400 and maybe even reimburse me for that overdraft fee, though that probably won't happen because HP has horrible customer service.
Bottom Line: Don't buy HP
