Re: HP Pavilion dv9700 should also be on the list - but it is not even with a NVIDIA 8600 GPU

In response to AlisaC123, I have the Pavillion dv9720us, I haven't had any issues with the overheating actually preventing the OS from operating, but this is probably the hottest laptop I've ever used.  I'm actually surprised it hasn't fried anything else.

On a related note, my earlier post stated that my screen was currently grey and this was the 2nd time I've had this issue in the 18 months I've had this laptop.  By some miracle, after using an external monitor for the last month, the laptop screen mysteriously came back on.  It's been working for 2 days now.  It had flickered and turned on for a couple minutes at a time over the past month, but never actually worked like this.  I'm still extremely unsatisfied with HP and their support regarding this issue.  I'm counting the days until the monitor dies again.  In the meantime, I feel as though I'm being productive again.  It makes you wonder about the issue though.  Is there some magical reset that has occurred?  Who knows.  I'm still extremely unsatisfied with HP and their support regarding this issue.  I'm utilizing the number to the corporate office that was provided a couple posts ago.  Thank you.

There's already a class action suit -- look thru this thread, it's all there.  I signed up today because HP didn't want to hear my complaint when I called their so-called customer service.  It was "your computer is out of warranty" and "you can buy an extended warranty".

There was a reference in this thread that was inappropriate for most us. Google "millberg nvidia class action" for more info.

I was having same problem with black screen on my HP Pavillion dv9700.  Appears to be fixed by using the direct download of sp36812 HP Update for Recovery Manager.

lacon1: thanks for the tip, but i'm not sure why that would have any effect on the problem. are you sure it wasn't the new BIOS or NVIDIA drivers that did the trick?  the latter two should help prevent the problem for those who not yet experienced problems, but doesn't work if the problem has already started. i hope your video problem does not come back!

Re: HP Pavilion dv9700 should also be on the list - but it is not even with a NVIDIA 8600 GPU

[ Edited ]

Another vic here.

Possible fixes:

1. BIOS update recommended by HP

Most reports indicate it's ineffectual or in some cases aggravating.

2. HP's $400 "fix"

Many who've chosen this option had their new MB's fail shortly after.

3. There are some sellers on Ebay (Search "HP DV9700") who claim to fix

for $100-$300. Most have good FB but I have no personal experience with

    any,

4. External monitor/display

    Works but cumbersome.

If you're running Vista, power down, plug the external into the VGA port

and power back up - should recognize the new monitor.

I ain't holdin' my breath.
