My previous text was removed by the moderator, which merely suggested that us 400 or so on this forum sould have the same rights as the thousands of other HP users with the same problem and should be included in any existing litigation. Surprising that HP would be so diligent in moderating their forums yet so poor in taking responsibility for an overheating issue so common in their laptops.

Well, we bought our dv9700 in July2008.
It crashed 2 days ago. Black screen and just tries to boot on over and over, never gets passed that unless in safe mode and then still have a black screen so can't go any farther.
For the amount of money paid for this lap top I would expect it to last at least 3 years without having to pay extra for an extended warranty. This is the same problem the prior laptop models had and are getting reimbursed through a class action law-- suit. The problem should have been fixed by the time this model was put out, but no! Now it isn't included in the class action??? Doesn't make sense to me.
For now bought an external box of some sort and put the hard drive in it and plug it into our desk top usb port to get all my info off. I shouldn't have to be doing this, but I am not putting out money for a new laptop at this point.

Can you please let me know what you are doing to remove the Hard drive info. All my kids ITunes are on the laptop as well as family photos and the wifes resume.
Thanks

Nvidia GPU Repair
this is not a permanent fix, the 8600 gpu will still fail once the soldering joints heat up again, this is just a reflow probably, what we need is a recall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Glad I saw all your posts...my daughter's laptop (dv6700 with an nvidia card) has been having the same problems: overheating, shutting down, now black, unusable screen. IT IS shoddy manufacturing and if HP doesn't start addressing legitimate customer complaints, it will go out of business.
Very dissapointing....points to an underlying illness in american design and manufacturing and they don't see, apparently, that global competition will send them spiraling...

The best way to try and rescue files off the hdd is to get an Adapter or Enclosure to put it into and plug into a USB post on a working computer.

You can add another HP Pavilion dv9700 to the list. Machine is just over 2 years old and has just developed grey vertical lines making the picture impossible to view.
I thought I would try the Live Chat with HP to see if this was a known issye with this model (which it clearly is from this forum's comments) and they just did the basic diagnostic 0 boot the machine and go into the BIOS. Of course you can't see the BIOS when all you have are vertical grey lines!
HP live chat just informed me 'you need a new screen. As it is out of warranty you will need to pay a repair centre to replace this'.
I was then going to get a screen on ebay and replace myself and realised that if it is a recurring problem when the components heat up as previously suggested, this will simply increase the wasted money on this machine.

Computers, like humans, may show symptoms long before they die, but it can just be that u start the computer and suddenly it is dead. Maybe, the symptoms were too subtle, like heat levels are3high but u do not really notice that.
In my case, it was working and the next time I switched it on, the graphics card (apparently) got fried.
HP used to be a very proud technical company with excellent quality. It seems that the PC business has changed all that. There are hundreds of HP laptop users, who within the last 12 months have burnt out graphics cards and THEY DON'T CARE. Mr Hewlett and Mr Packard probably turning in their graves.
For huge companies to fall takes much longer but if they do not clear the mess, the down turn for them will start pretty soon.

My niece's laptop computer is experiencing the trouble you are all talking about...Striped lines, static, reboots by itself, etc. She will bring her laptop to me today and I will check what the problem is. Due to my research, it seems to be one or more of the following:
1) The motherboard is overheating,
2) The NVIDIA card is defective, and/or
3) The fan is too close to the video card and therefore the heat affects the card which then affects the screen view.
I am not a computer technician, but the fact that HP is not doing anything about it, is ridiculous. My niece's parents just paid a lot of money to have power source fixed. They bought this computer in 2008 I believe. Now out of warranty.
