I have the same problem.  I was playing a game and upon closing the game down the screen went all haywire with red and green lines all over the screen. Upon restart I found the problem.  I knew it was video related from all the XBox 360 failures I've seen, very similar when the video card lets go.  My machine is only 18 months old.  Come on HP, help us out.  You're the best personal computer manufacture left.  Don't turn your back on us. Do the right thing, stand behind your product, stand behind your customers who are in need of your help.

Same problem...purchased HP Pavillion 9700 in May 08, 12 mnths later, screen goes black, Hp replaced "a problem with the motherboard" (luckily still under warranty)...5 months after repair the screen goes black again, able to boot up,hear noises and see a very faint picture.. contacted Hp, spent 2 hours and $100 for the tech to tell me $398 to have it fixed.  I called back the next day only to have the tech hang up on me during my complaint.   Unbelievable!

Is there noone reading this that is able to phone HP and talk to them directly about this?

I'm travelling overseas and can't do it...

@itzchak, there's another thread on this same forum with over 86 pages of complaints about the same thing. Our dv9700s failed in the same ways as the 9500s in the thread are described. Hundreds of us have phoned them only to be told it's $398 to fix it, no compromise. They refuse to give us a discount or add us to their defective product lists.  It's wrong, but the greedy members of HPs corporate body will not acknowledge the problem for our model.

Re: HP Pavilion dv9700 should also be on the list - but it is not even with a NVIDIA 8600 GPU

Update to a post I made last week...

Writing a letter of complaint to HP headquarters resulted in a call inquiry from them and subsequent call from a case manager.  Since the problem was being handled by an extended warranty from American Express, the case manager wasn't able to do anything, but he thought I did the right thing by posting on this forum.

The bright side of all of this for me anyways, is that American Express has refunded the full purchase price of the laptop, so I got to use a pretty sweet laptop for 18 months for around $50 (inflation and interest).

Is there any way of going public with this in a way that they'll take notice...?

It doens't make sense that certain models should be off the list for no good reason...(what reason do they give?)
