HP Pavilion zv5240us will not resume after standby or hibernate.

Hello all, I just had a client come in with a pavilion 5240 that will not display on the lcd screen.  I gather that he was in the habit of closing down the laptop's lid without powering off the system thus letting it go into standby/hibernate mode.  Now when you power the laptop on the drives spin up, but no post screen or windows logo is displayed.  I can plug in an external monitor and get video display.  What could be causing this and how would I fix it so that his lcd works?
