Over a year ago, I had problems with the Motherboard (drivers completely failed to turn on when computer was powered up) and later learned there was a recall on my model and, seeing as it was still under warranty, I shipped it off to HP and had it repaired. It's run well ever since, but this morning when I turned it on, I smelled burning plastic.
I got up to invesitgate the smell, not realizing it was my computer. When I returned my computer, the screen had faded almost entirely to black, although the computer was still running with all my applications open and everything. Now, when I boot it up, the screen tends to kick in for a moment before once again fading to black.
I've read that the dv2000 has a problem in the soldering on the GPU. Is that what could possibly be wrong with my computer? Or is this something else entirely?

Overheating due to bad thermal solution and GPU solder breakdown is likely the cause of the problem. Many owners who are outside warranty now look at reflowing as a solution rather than replacing entire motherboard.Either self using a heatgun or a paid service by one of the many who offer it now.
