HP notebook 210-4150NR does not seem to run Apple 2004 Cinema monitor, with seemingly correct adapter. Is that true?

I see these adapters all the time and I can never make sense out of them. VGA is an analog signal and DVI is a digital signal, they are not compatible.
Here is an example of what is needed, in this case this one does HDMI, but a converter to go from HDMI to DVI is also needed for you Apple Monitor unless the monitor has an HDMI input.
The only real difference between HDMI and DVI is that the DVI signal only carries the video, this is a very basic explanation.
