im not sure what happened, but this is how it looks when i turn on the laptop.

After you press the power button begin tapping the F8 key ( at 1 second intervals) to try starting in safe mode. Please post your results.

that isnt the problem, i can connect it to a monitor and it works fine ;(

That means that your LCD display has failed. Great job of isolating the issue by use of an external display.!
Is your notebook still in warranty? (standard warranty is one year)

THe image you have posted is a clear indication of the LCD screen failure which needs to be replaced If the notebook is under warranty, YOu can contact HP Tech support on 1-800-474-6836.

Nope this laptop is about 4 years old, but so all i need to do is replace the screen?

That is correct. Replace the complete unit with cover to make your life simpler. Replacing only the screen is a rather involved and painstaking process you may wish to forgo.
Check online vendors to find reasonable price for the replacement display screen assembly. You can get the part number from the service and maintenence guide at the HP support portal for your notebook.
There is a website called Insidemylaptop.com where you can find instructions on how to do that.
