I keep having an issue with HP Media smart software, it will not read a DVD, Downloaded updates

HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC, Windows 7, Message: Solve a problem with HP Mediasmart TV software, download HP updates doesn't work, will not play DVD, need to know what to do to play DVD's.

Hi,

If you're using HP MediaSmart DVD to play DVDs, try the following.

HP now provides a version of Cyberlinks PowerDVD 10 which seems to be a better solution.  Download the latest installer for this on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.

When the download has completed, open windows Control Panel, open Programs and Features, right click the entry for HP MediaSmart DVD and select Uninstall - when this process has completed, restart the notebook.

When windows  has reloaded, open your Downloads folder and double-click the installer for PowerDVD 10 to start the installation.  When this has completed, see if your DVD now plays OK.

Hi,

First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.

Windows 7

Vista

Check if you can now play DVDs.

If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.

sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter. 

Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if DVDs will play now.
