Laptop only boots sometimes

Hey I have an hp compaq presario f555 with windows 7 ultimate. The problem is, it only boots sometimes. If I have it plugged in for 5 minutes or so it will boot right up. If I restart it from there it will shut completely off, and then boot to a black screen. It will keep shutting off and then back on to try and boot but still black screen. If i shut it off from there and let it sit for a little bit then it will boot. Any ideas? I have tried reinstalling windows 7 with no help.

Ive been reading around and have heard this is a problem with the integrated gpu on this laptop. is this true?

Hi,

When you are able to boot to windows.

Type msconfig in the start search and press enter.

System configuration will come up, in the startup tab.

uncheck all the programs and restart the system.

Let me know if the system boots better after this.

Did not seem to make a difference. Still does the same thing as in the first post.

It could be a problem with the hardware.

Please run a startup test.

I may be doing something wrong, but I tried pressing esc then f2, and it didnt do anything. It took me to the boot menu. I may not have the diagnostics on my laptop.

When you power on the system, Hp logo comes up and stays on the screen for about a sec or two.

You will have to press the Esc key during that time.

Try tapping the F2 at the HP logo, if it does not work try F10 at the Hp logo.

I bought it off ebay several months ago, but I believe it is a fairly old model. 

I am still not booting to any diagnostic tests. My laptop may be too old a model to have the diagnostics installed. Is there any alternative program, or install that I can do to test my computer for problems?

Hi,

For HP notebooks there are two options to run a test on the HDD from F2 system Diag or F10 BIOS.

You can still try F10 BIOS which has a HDD test.

Please send me the product and serial # of the notebook.

Please dont post the serial # its treated a personal info, but can post the product #.

Serial # you can send it as a private message.

You can find both the product and serial on the base of the notebook, for some nb in the battery compartment.

When you turn on the system does it stay on the HP logo for a while before you get the windows logo ?

I have the same issue with a brand new ProBook 4320s that arrived today.  Boots into Windows 7 fine first time but if I try to do a restart or shutdown and then startup again all I get is a black screen.

If I then do CTRL+ALT+DEL  it will boot into Windows 7 as normal.

Ran the HP self-diagnostic tests re. F2 and it passed all tests.

Now doing a clean reinstall of Win7 to see if that makes  difference but very puzzling.

If cannot resolve sending it back under warranty.
