This was obviously not the same problem.
Unless, of course, you managed to change programs without having to look at the screen at all.
"The screen gave out, apparently, and is absolutely useless now."
Let me reiterate this in clearer terms,
The problem with my screen was that it flickered and STOPPED WORKING ENTIRELY.
as in DEAD. SCREEN.

I also have the same problem. And dealing with HP Support, is a joke. They do not read what you Wright so you are constantly repeating yourself. But that is another PROBLEM. So after hours of trying to chat with these people and them telling me I have to send my laptop in for service I decided to try something else.
What solved my problem with the flickering screen was performing a destructive recovery. Now, I was able to save as much information as I could before doing so because my screen would flicker like an old fashion TV then just go to black.
Performing the destructive recovery myself saved me a lot of time and I am sure a lot of money. Although I will never get the time back having to deal with the HP Chat people, it did fix the problem.
If you don't know how to do it, ask the chat people they will direct you to a weblink to get the directions. You will need "recovery disks" which include 1, the os and 2 the drivers for your specific PC.
Good luck...
One more point, I gave the laptop to my daughter and it happened to her, I did the destructive recovery, fixed it. Gave it back to her, did it again, did the same thing and fixed it. Each time, she let the PC run out of battery and did not plug it in when the warning came up, now I don't remember if I did the same thing when it happened to me but it is quite possible that she did it at that time as well because she was using it.
Destructive recovery = reformatting your hard drive, and setting you laptop or desktop back to out of the box condition.

Thanks, I have already tried this. I think the problem is the motherboard. We have 3 HP laptops and the motherboards have failed on all of them. I call HP to send it in for repair and they told me I had to pay them $300 up front.....I don't think so. That is only my guess and I'm not sending them $300 based on MY guess. I asked if they would take it and check it out w/ an estimate first and they told me no.
I plan to find someone else to repair it and then I will give it to my daughter. I am DONE with HP. I have ordered a MacBook Pro, no more HP ever. The product quality is terrible and tech support is worse.

IF YOU COULD SOLVE A SCREEN ISSUE THROUGH SOFTWARE, MAKE A NEW THREAD, THIS IS NOT THE SAME PROBLEM.
If you had to MOVE A PART OF THE LAPTOP for the screen to work, YOU MUST SEND YOUR LAPTOP IN FOR REPAIR. IT IS A BAD WIRE.
THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED, READ THE **bleep** THREAD.

You need to get it checked out, it may be your motherboard.

I have a dv5 1002nr, and i'm having the same problems with screen flicking, it certainly seems to be an issue with hp. Any 6 months after i purchased laptop it started, hp took it back and replaced the mother board which seemed to fix it for a while, in the last month of my warranty my charger packed in too, so hp said they would sent another, long story short nine weeks later no charger, so I purchased a new one myself and what do you know when i switched the screen was flickering, now its out of warranty and up to me to fix it. Anyone have any other solutions?
Thinking of a new computer now and will never ever purchase another hp product, they are usless, for customer care.
