Greetings,
I purchased my HP Pavillion dv5-1010us Entertainment pc precisely on Labor Day 2008 because of a sale going on.
The screen has a tendency to flicker to mostly white with thin colored bars (reflecting some colors that are supposed to be shown) going vertical in the center, and some going horizontal near the top.
The problem has only arisen recently, and it shows up sporadically. Sometimes it just flickers a second or two, then returns to normal, and doesn't happen for a while. Other times, it's going near constantly, and I can't see what I'm doing.
Also, sometimes before or after the screen has flickered, thick horizontal bars darken the screen and move from top to bottom repeatedly, vaguely remenisant of when you take a video of TV or the like, and horizontal bars scroll down it.
It seems that it also only usually happens when a) the lapotp is not on a sturdy surface, small shakes every now and again because of the surface, and b) whenever I tilt the screen.
Sometimes, just putting the screen at a different position fixes it, but most of the time I just have to wait out until it stops flickering.
I'm running Vista Home Premium 64-bit,
graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
in device manager, it says the driver is "Generic PnP Monitor", but also says it's the most up-to-date driver.
(Short version)
Computer Specs:
Vista Home Premium 64-bit
nVidia GeForce 9200M GS
"Generic PnP Monitor" driver
Issue: Screen sporadically flickers mostly white with a few thin lines of color when the laptop screen is tilted or unsteady, and occasionally at very random moments.
The problem only arose recently .

*UPDATE*
The screen gave out, apparently, and is absolutely useless now.
I turned it on, and hit f10 repeatedly to activate the beep codes, nothing happened.
f8 - nadda.
Called HP and I'm having it sent in.
My friend thinks that the screen had a loose screw, and the fact that something was loose rubbed the cable and cut it or something.

I called HP support a while ago. (Sometime at the begginning of the month.)
There was nothing they could do over the phone, so they sent me a box on 2-day Shipping from FedEx.
Got the box and sent my laptop in. They recieved it on the 7th and sent it using FedEx on the 8th. I got it back on the 10th.
From what I can tell, it's a brand spanking new Screen. The top of my laptop (back of the screen) had a few minor and cosmetic scratches in the surface of it from normal wear and tear when I sent it in. When I recieved the repaired laptop, there was a film on the top of the laptop (back of the screen). I peeled that off, and there were no scratches whatsoever.
It's definitely the same laptop, though (my touchpad has some marks on it, too, from normal wear and tear. I use this machine often.
). So it must be a new screen.
The left side is also no longer loose at all, and it works exactly as it should.
I've used it everyday since I've gotten it back and have had no issues or problems at all.
So the only solution seems to be sending it in, unfortunately. On the positive side, though, it only took about 7 business days after I got off the phone with them for me to have it back already.
I called on a Tuesday night, got the box that Thursday night when I got off work, it left FedEx on Friday, they got it on the following Tuesday, and had it Fixed and Shipped on Wednesday, for me to have recieved it on that Friday.
In short, while it is unfortunate that the screen stopped functioning properly, it wasn't too agonizing to go little more than a week without it.

My wife's laptop just started with this issue. I read on another web site that there can be an issue with a flourescent light tube that creates the backlighting. if it goes completely (black screen) you can shine a flashlight or bright sun on the screen and see the Windows desktop image, proving the problem.
I'm contacting HP right away to ship the laptop back for a replacement while the waranty is still in effect!!
Best of luck everyone
