Hello!
I've just read several posts about Pavilion Dv5 black screen problems, but I couldn't find any solutions for my issue, so that's why I made this post.
I have a Dv5 1060eh laptop, which is about 2 and a half years old. It has GeForce 9200M graphics card, and I use Win7 32bit op.system.
My problem began, when I started to use external monitor with my laptop. When I connect external monitor and turn on the laptop, it's built-in display remains black, but on the xternal screen everything looks fine: both the HP logo and the Win7 logo is displayed. BUT! When I disconnect the xternal monitor and after that I turn on the computer, the built-in display remains black till the Win7 login screen (the display only turns on there).
Another thing is when I disconnect the xternal display while the Win7 is running, the built-in display doesn't resume the original resolution, which was set for it: on the right side of the display, I have a black column, and the maximum applicable resolution is 1024x768.
Important thing, that the display switching key combination (Fn+F4) doesn't have any effect at all.
I hope that you have a good idea for me, because I've run out of them...
I've already tried:
- reinstalling the GeForce software package (the newest and older versions too)
- resetting CMOS
- system reinstall

3 month old post that was never solved!!! Why does this not suprise me? HP has really been letting me down lately!!!

I am sure they aren't checking this post any longer but because you asked, maybe you have a similar problem. I think this problem will be very hard to solve without input from the author but I would like to see if he was getting his driver from nVidia or HP. I would ask him to install the HP driver and see if it makes a difference. The HP driver would be more likely to handle the function keys correctly. There could be some incompatibilities with the drivers off the nVidia site. I know nVidia would tell you that oem implementation of video chips in notebooks is the responsibility of the oem. This is such a difficult task, I believe nVidia helps with the drivers but notebook design or bios version could be causing a problem with the standard newer drivers from nVidia.
