Thanks for the info. I took it apart and can duplicate the problem by playing arounf with the monitor flex cable. Either the cable iself is bad, or the connector is. I'm going to order a new cable and try replacing that ans see how it holds up.
Ill keep you all posted.

Update - I took it to a friend who does laptop repair, and after seeing the issue, which is shown in this thread, in the first post, he confirmed what I originally thought, it's not the inverter board. He suggested a crimped or pinched cable though, and told me how to fix that (note: Radio Shack sells this cable repair stuff that fuses onto the bad section of cable with a hair dryer).
I took off the plastic surrounding the display and found that a tiny square piece of sticky metal, a kind of bizarre clip, at the bottom of the display, near the inverter board and its cables, had come out its mooring and was sticking into the cable. Only way I can describe this - this tiny square of metal, sticky on one side looks like a piece of mosaic mirror, and it acts, I guess, like an internal hinge. Anyway, it fell out, so I left it out, put laptop (HP Pavilion DV5000) back together and the problem is resolved.
