Problems with display using HDMI

I have a Pavilion g7 Notebook.  When I connect to the TV using a HDMI cable the display changes to a band about 2/3 of the screen.  It will show on the TV but is a little distorted.  I have connected before without problems and my husband can connect his laptop without any problems.  Does anyone have any ideas?
