Using HDMI with integrated graphics on dm4

I have a new HP dm4 laptop that I'm really enjoying. I configured it with the ATI dedicated graphics card as well as the integrated Intel GPU. It has the switchable graphics.

I'm noticing something weird when I try to plug it into my monitor using HDMI. I can't seem to use the HDMI port when I'm on integrated graphics - it makes me switch to the dedicated GPU in order to recognize a monitor on the HDMI port. Is there any way I can fix this? Ideally, I'd like to leave the integrated graphics on all the time unless I really need the dedicated capability.

I'm guessing that the HDMI capability of the integrated card is somehow turned off because of the configuration with the dedicated card. If that's the case, is there any way to turn that capability back on? The integrated card has to have HDMI capability because the laptop ships with an HDMI port and the dedicated card is an optional add-on. So I know the integrated GPU must be able to use HDMI. I'm just now sure how to enable it.

Any help?

Re: Using HDMI with integrated graphics on dm4

Any success with this? I came the same conclusion you did about being disabled with the integrated graphics but would certainly be nice to access HDMI all the time, i use the hdmi constantly.

Re: Using HDMI with integrated graphics on dm4

Hi,

What is the p/n of your notebook? Look at the barcoded sticker on the bottom of the notebook.

Which CPU is installed?

Which video adapters are installed? ( Device manager will show both) type device manager in start search box and select device manager above and click on the triangle next to Display adapters.

If you have the Catalyst Control Center installed you should be able to select the options available for your display adapters. The onboard adapter may have very limited options available.

regards,

erico

Re: Using HDMI with integrated graphics on dm4

I have a dm4 and am trying to connect it to my computer to watch TV online through an HDMI cable. (I pasted the information on the system at the bottom of this post.)

I went in and disabled the Intel graphics card so that I could be assured that I am using the dedicated ATI graphics card.

I too have had some issues with the TV sensing the PC. The work around that we have is to plug everything in and turn the TV on. Then we re boot the PC.

This isn't ideal. Shouldn't this be plug and play?

About the dm4:

dm4t
• Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-460M Dual Core Processor (2.53 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz
• 512MB DDR3 ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 6370 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA]
• Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 500GB 5400RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
• SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
• HP TrueVision Webcam and Fingerprint Reader
• Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN with Wireless Display Support

Re: Using HDMI with integrated graphics on dm4

Hey all,

I pulled up the MB diagrams for the dm4 and by design the notebook is working that way it should.

If you have UMA only then the HDMI will work in the integrated. If you have an additional dedicated card (switchable grpahics) the HDMI is only designed to work with the dedicated only and not the integrated.
