Vertical Lines Present on display, machine hangs on high resolution modes

Good Evening,

As of late I have been experiencing some peculiar video issues with my dv9000 series laptop. I first suspected there was a problem with the system when certain 3d graphics intensive games started crashing when run at resolutions higer then 800x600. Lately some newer problems have crept up however. Firstly, when the display is set at a resolution higher than 1024x768, the system hangs indefinitely, the only progress upon restart is a small white box that appears after about 5 minutes. Secondly some strange artifacts are being displayed in the form of: a) extra white and red pixels around the mouse cursor, and b) vertical lines that present themselves then the system is at VGA resolution (note: these vertical lines are present even while in bios setup. The third issue I'm experiencing is a single system beep played when I scroll a document or web page at a high rate of speed (this is a POST style beep, not the clicking or buzzing sound that some people have experienced). I have read that there have been some problems with defective Nvidia Geforce go 7600 GPUs in the dv9000 series notebooks, however the symptoms mentioned above do not really match up with the description laid out on HP's help page. Attachments of these problems will follow.

Re: Vertical Lines Present on display, machine hangs on high resolution modes

I have the exact lines on my display during boot and in the bios. The lines turn to green and cover the entire screen if I boot Vista in safe mode. The screen is black if I boot normal. Do you know what the issue is?

You have NVIDIA GPU issue. I have the same problem before (dv9207us) call HP and ask for $400 to fix it.

Try Google  Nvidia GPU failure you'll find many unhappy dv9000 owners that have the same issue.

Instead of paying to HP, I repaired it by reflowing the GPU with a heatgun, how to do it? I learn from this old guide

I wish HP & Nvidia do not make the same mistake in their new notebooks :smileysad:

Re: Vertical Lines Present on display, machine hangs on high resolution modes

Hey All,

Just wanted to let you know that I was having similar problems with my dv9207us laptop.  At first I thought it was the inverter for the LCD screen, however that wasn't the case.  To determine if truly is a graphics card issue, try hooking up you laptop to an external monitor or tv (if you have hdmi or dvi out).  When I did that, it was fine.  For my laptop, it ended up being the LCD display cable ( decided to try that since the lines would change as I opened and closed my laptop).  Apparently some wires got pinched too much, and when I replaced the cable, the lines went away.  HP sells them for approximately $65.00 depending on the model of your laptop.  Try searching the web elsewhere because you should be able to get them cheaper.

Not all blank screen problem is Nvidia issue problem. Some may have a broken LCD, cables, inverter etc. But original poster surely have Nvidia issue.
