Windows Desktop Size does not match screen size

I have a HP HDX18 1200 and Vista 64 Home Premium. Since I got that laptop the Windows desktop exceeds the size of the display. I can tell because I can move a window outside of the visible range of the display and drop it there. The size of the desktop is exceeding in all four dimensions up/down/left/right. I am on the most recent driver levels for all components and software. It got shipped in this state but there does appear to be any setting I could find that would shrink the desktop to the size of the screen. It's happening as well if I attach an external display or change the Windows desktop resolution. No settings in Windows or Nvidia appears to be able to change that. Perhaps this works as designed but I'd rather like to change it if there is a way.

Anyone any hints?
