Hi,
Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager, open up DVD/CD-ROM Drives - On the General tab is there an error code showing in the 'Device status' box and if there is, what is it?

Hi,
Ok, try the following.
As you're using HP MediaSmart DVD to play discs, try the following.
HP now provides a version of Cyberlinks PowerDVD 10 which seems to be a better solution. Download the latest installer for this on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp56501-57000/sp5690
When the download has completed, open windows Control Panel, open Programs and Features, right click the entry for HP MediaSmart DVD and select Uninstall - when this process has completed, restart the notebook.
When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder and double-click the installer for PowerDVD 10 to start the installation. When this has completed, see if your discs now plays OK.
Regards,
DP-K

I am not able to get my DVD player to work for my Pavilion Notebook dv7 as well. I do not have the MediaSmart DVD you mentioned. Is there another way to fix my problem?

That proposed solution does not resolve my issue.
Optical drive works because I can burn to it.
No conflicts in DM either. ODD driver up to date.
PowerDVD 10 is not a resolution. Tells me to insert a disc.
