I have the same problem with my Pavilion dm1, using Windows 7 64 bit. I've combed through dozens of pages and it seems like this is a fairly common problem that no one seems to have an answer to.
This happens when I unplug my laptop. The brightness control keys no longer work, and when I go to my power settings in the control panel and try to manually adjust them there, it has no effect.
