my high performance graphics card never switches even when i have it sent to high performance.

P Name: Pavillion g Series

P Number: A8M93EA#ABU

OS Windows 7 home

Hi,

I have 2 AMD cards in my notebook which i purchased to play games with.

Since installing games, I have set them to high performance with the switchable graphics options, and enabled crossfire.

I then start a game, lets say Diablo III open AMD system monitor and hit the record button. ( i've done this as games are slow and they really shouldnt be)

I've played for an hr, gone back to system monitor to see the results.

Sadly, at no point does the second graphics card come into play. I have tried this with serveral games, and not one of them triggers the high end card.

I have AMD 6620g - which max' out fairly quickly

AMD 7450m - which never ever ever ever comes into action.

I have tried multiple applications at the same time and monitored for several hours.

Can you offer a solution for this please?

Kind Regards,

Hi it's just a thought. But I also had the same situation as you have with the 7450M not being used even though the 6620G was maxing out.

All I had to do was change my settings to use DirectX10 and not 9. Now it uses both of them happily.

Good question... I used the actual game to select which version in its settings. But maybe you should download the latest dx driver and see if your game will pick up dx10/11 as this lappy is compatible with dx11.

I'll take a look around in the meantime:smileywink:

Re: my high performance graphics card never switches even when i have it sent to high performance.

Just an update (and I'm no IT guru) but since I installed the DX11 update the secondary card kicks in when required by all games utilizing DX10/11. I did notice that Fallout New Vegas & Mass Effect 3 don't use the second card and therefore I feel they are DX9 and not 10/11 compatible.

Maybe it's is only used when you use a DX10/11 compatible game. As I have said I'm not up on this kind of stuff so anyone feel free to set it right if I am wrong :smileywink:

Hi,

Sadly, this didnt fix my problem, I'm playing ghost recon future soilder now running dx11. maxed out main card, second card is cold.

Also, on AMD monitor, the second cards speed and hertz read as 0. but when I use HP self diag it reports no issues.

Im mightily confused.

Thanks for trying though

Re: my high performance graphics card never switches even when i have it sent to high performance.

Hi,

I have self  resolved this issue. There is information on this forum that suggests that you cannot apply a fixed setting in bios for the G series.

This is not the case; I set it to fixed and the card comes to life. However, it does not function in dynamic mode for whatever reason.

Not a total solution, but good enough.

Good to hear. Wondering if it's worth myself changing to fixed. Does changing it to fix utilise both cards all the time? or is it still dependant on which DX is implemented?

Thanks

John.

Well I gave it a go and after selecting 'Fixed' in my BIOS. Rebooted and it ended up showing 1  card instead of the 2 in system monitor. Very strange indeed. :smileysurprised:

Re: my high performance graphics card never switches even when i have it sent to high performance.

check in device manager to make sure the card is enabled.

didn t have to do that on mine, but I'd been fiddling for the whole day so i'd prob covered that step earlier.
