I use an external monitor connected to my laptop (it works fine) but cannot get the laptop to display. Never had this issue before; wondering if the display is burned out. Laptop is a G42 and about 10 months old. I wondering if I somehow disabled the display.
Any thoughts out there?

It's unlikely you accidentally disabled the display. As you said maybe the display is burned out or rather the back-light is gone, who knows for sure. Anyways it doesn't matter, it's still under warrantee, contact HP and set up a warrantee claim.

My laptop has the same problem, after the bios update that installed today...
HP Envy 17
... rolled back the bios and it works now.
