my screen is gray, however when i hook up to an hdmi cable to my tv it works on the tv???

my screen is gray, however when I hook up an HDMI cable, it works great on my tv.  what is wrong?

That means thenotebook display system works, but the  LCD display has issues and needs to be replaced.
