"ATI display driver has stopped working properly" error

Hello HP Support forum,

Let's start with the five questions everyone should answer before receiving help!

1.  I have an HP dv6 Pavilion Notebook (Product Number = XW898AV)

2.  I have the OEM version of Windows 7 64-bit Home Edition installed

3.  My error message looks a bit like this = "ATI Display Driver has stopped working properly"

4.  This has been occuring regularly since I bought the computer a year ago.  HP support has been significantly less than helpful and since I finally have some time to debug, I would like to try to solve this myself (and hopefully with some helpful advice from this forum).

5.  Okay, the more specific description of the problem (I posted this on Reddit a little while ago, I know, strange place to find tech support, but whatever sometimes they are helpful, so I just copy/pasted):

This error happens at least once (or twice) a week. When this occurs, I close everything as fast as possible (saving my work as I go) and restart ASAP. If I do not, my computer will BSOD and restart. This has not bothered me until I decided to start to play Diablo 3 last week. My computer consistently does THIS ([1] link to video here). As you can see, something must be wrong and I do not think it is my internet connection as the "hiccup" that appears to occur with the framerate happens regularly when I use my computer (i.e. text will appear slightly delayed from when I type, videos will lag ever so slightly occasionally, etc). Plus, I have invited my friends over to play, and their computers operate fine on the same internet connection as mine (i.e. when I have lag, they do not, and we are sitting right next to each other.  One guy even has an HP Pavilion dv6!).  I know this could be many things, so I will list what I have already tried:

  1. I updated the drivers on my HP to the most current that I can find on HP support website.

  2. I've done all the computer cleaning possible that I can think of (removed temporary files, cleaned registry - don't worry, I backed everything up before I did this, in case something broke (nothing broke), I defrag'd the disk, removed old programs that I don't need anymore, etc).

  3. I've tried messing with the Diablo 3 graphics settings, but it always "hiccups" like that, even at the lowest possible settings.

Now, I have no definitive proof that my graphics card is causing the game to be problematic like this, but my gut tells me there is something between these ATI driver failure errors and the poor gameplay performance. I've posted links to my system specs ([2] DXDiagnostic and [3] MSInfo files here) and I will provide any additional information that you all wish to see.

Okay, that was a long post.  I will do my best to provide any additional information if it is required.  To be sure I am clear, this is what I am hoping to achieve with this solution:

1.  No more ATI display driver crashes.  This are troublesome and occur regularly.  While I have adapted my work around them, I would rather not have them occur anymore.

2.  Better Diablo 3 game play performance.  The lag/hiccup often gets me killed, and I'm tired of it.

I'd rather not wipe Windows and reinstall since the OEM Operating system was not provided on a disk and I am not sure how to get HP to provide me with one.  I will if I have to, but I'd rather not.  Please let me know if I was not clear in my post.  Thank you for your time.

Re: "ATI display driver has stopped working properly" error

Either this question has already been answered before, or no one here can help me. If anyone from HP support forum can just respond, I'll feel better about working towards a solution to this issue.

Any response at all - good or bad - would be fantastic. Thanks
