I am using an Envy TouchSmart 15 and I have just run an update of Windows 8.1 based on the system auto update (it ran 5 updates).

Prior to the update, I used a 27" monitor as the main screen and this was connected via the HDMI port.  Right after the update, the system doesn't seem to recognise the HDMI port anymore and it goes back to using the Envy laptop screen as the main screen.  I changed the HDMI cable but it made no difference.  I subsequently connected another laptop to the 27" monitor via HDMI and it worked fine.  So it appears both the monitor and the HDMI cable are fine.

Please can you help ?

Hey yawbus,

I would first like to welcome you to the HP Forums!

Thank you for sharing the troubleshooting steps that you have done already, and I will say you are correct that the issue is not with the HDMI Cable, or the 27" monitor. From what you have described in your post, it does sound as though the issue is with the drivers, possibly a conflict.

I would like to start of with installing the original video drivers that came with your notebook. I have included the document 'Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 😎'. Please follow through the steps for just reinstalling the original video drivers. After the original drivers have been installed, please restart your computer.

Now once the computer has restarted, you will need to install any updates that are available for both HP, and Windows. You can install both of these through the HP Support Assistant. I have included the document 'Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 😎'. Scroll down the page about halfway, and you should see an option for Updates and tune-ups. Please follow the options for HP updates, and Windows updates.

If you are still experiencing the same issue after the above troubleshooting steps, please let me know the full model number of your Envy TouchSmart 15. I have included the document 'Guide to finding your product number'. As well, please confirm the current version of Windows that you are running. If you need assistance in finding the version, I have included the document 'Which Windows operating system am I running?'.

Looking forward to your reply! Smiley Happy

Hi Lisa, Thanks for the solution.  It works !

Sorry it took me quite a while to reply as I had problem downloading the Windows updates, and I had to manually install the updates eventually.

Hi,

This worked for me too, thanks!  Using an HP ENVY dv6 laptop plugged in through HDMI to an HP Pavilion 25bw monitor.

Windows did an update, maybe to 8.1 which I am now running, and after the update, the monitor was not recognized when connected to the HDMI port.  Not sure the update had been applied properly as it began installing when I turned my computer on.  After the installation completed, the Monitor connected to the HDMI was not available in the display settings.

Followed your steps and now the monitor is properly detected and available when connected to HDMI.  Using it now.

Thanks again.
