HP ENVY 5830 HDMI to DVI and External Monitor not deteced

I have a HP Envy 15 with the ATI 5830.  I want to connect an external monitor.  The external is a Samsung SyncMaster P2770HD and has a DVI (also has HDMI, but poor quality when used from a PC). My laptop has only HDMI.  When I use an HDMI to DVI-D converter my Laptop doesn't detect that there is an external monitor.  I have been through all my settings and updated the Bios and Video drivers.  Am I missing something. Appreciate any help.

Here are few Quick checks & info that i would like to have...

Have to tried Win+P key combo to transfer the image to the External Display?

HDMI to DVI-D converter are you sure that is working fine?

Could you post the graphics card driver version?

Yes.  I have tried the WIn+P Key.  Didn't help.  And clicked on the "Connect to a projector".  Didn't help.

No I can't say the HDMI to DVI-D is working. It never has for me. It came with an ASUS monitor and has NVIDIA stamped on it.  The Laptop doesn't seem to detect an external monitor is present, but when I remove the adapter and plug the HDMI 1.3 cable into the monitor it is detected.  My old 23 inch ASUS monitor works off the HDMI great but the Samsung 27 inch need to be power from the DVI.

I do have the latest BIOS (flashed today) and the latest Video drivers (dated around april 2010).

Hmmm...It looks like HDMI to DVI-D Adapter issue to me,as the HDMI port is working fine stand alone... I dont recall any issues, i have heard of HDMI to DVI-D related issue on Envy 15...

I bought a new HDMI to DVI-D Cable (Monster brand but only $9.20) and all works perfectly.

Thanks.
