Sounds like the video cable is gone.
If you can see the screen well enough, connect up the external monitor again with the HDMI cable and press the "Windows" and "P" key at the same time to select "Projector Only"
It could also be the lid switch, but I am still looking as to where HP has hidden it.
I have discovered that many manufactures have a switch in the motherboard that is turned of and on with a magnet in the lid. I am not sure if HP uses this set up.

Well that's good news ! At least that shows that the system board is OK !
It could be a bad cable or lid closing switch. I am also not going to rule out the inverter or backlights.
It's nearly impossible to tell with out replacing things one at time and most repair shops would replace all three.
At this point I am only comfortable recommending the video cable replacement and I would have you wait until I can find out where the lid switch is and a possible way to test it.
I came across a post where the guy replaced everything and still had a black screen and I don't want that to happen here.
He too could connect up a monitor where it would show the desk top, but even after replacing the screen, inverter and cable he had no success.
I'll run a post over at Notebook Review as to where the switch is, there are some very knowledgeable people over there.
I have some other sources to try as well.

I found where the sensor is, it's on the top edge of the power button board, see screen shot.
There is small permanent magnet that activates it underneath the hinge cover in that specific area.
Show this to the computer repair store and see what he has to say.
I would start with a simple procedure of reseating the power button board ribbon cable (at both ends).
The next step would be either to replace the video cable or the power button board, it's sort of a toss up.
At any rate see what the repair shop has to say.
Keep in mind that the HDX16 is a fairly good machine and if it's not beat up it's worth sinking some money into it.
If you do the work your self then that will be the biggest saving as the cost of labour is the expensive part.
There are video's on how to take it apart, how are you with that ? I won't lie to you though, it's a tricky job, even after the screws are removed you have to know exactly where to apply just the right of pressure to release the snaps.
It can be quite a task removing the back cover of the screen to get at the video cable.
Let me know your thoughts and if you want I will post a link to the video's and how to use them.
Here is a source for a used cable, if you can't find one on e-bay, I have dealt with these people before and they're fine.
Make sure you get the right one, there are two available, one for a single and the other is for a double.
Yours is probably dual lamp, but there is no real way of knowing until you open it up.

hpprob2012 sent me a personal massage on this subject and rather then make this personal, I have moved his message to me here in this thread as it may help others in the future; here is what he said :
update: I replace my laptop's inverter (Dual lamp inverter) but unfortunately the problem is not fixed. I still have the black screen which is connected to external monitor. Replacing inverter was very hard job but no success for me.
I don't know what should I do now?

Just to clarify something, can you still get your desk top on the external monitor, it's not quite clear in you last post that this is still possible ? Your wording is a bit vague.
You said you were going to take it to a repair shop for an opinion, did you do this and if so, what did they say ?
I am guessing that they told you to replace the inverter ??? If they did, that's "sound" advice.
I want to try an experiment (this assumes you're running Windows 7)
Use the external monitor so you can see your desk top.
Go to the Control Panel and find "Power Options".
In the left column on that page find "Choose what closing the lid does"
Select "Do Nothing" in the drop down box "When I Close The Lid" select for when the laptop is plugged in on the adpater. Do the same for the battery as well.
Shut down, disconnect the external monitor and boot up, can you see your desk top on the laptops screen ?
At this point you can replace the video cable as it's the least expensive part when compared to the screen.
However it's sounding more and more like the back-lights in the screen have failed, in which case the screen will have to be replaced.
I know the HDX series are difficult to work on, getting the actual screen out is even more difficult, so you may want to get a shop to do it for you.
The screen is held on to the bezel with this double sided 3M sticky tape and it's difficult to break the bond.
Some have worked a piece of dental floss in there to break the seal while I myself have used a hot hair dryer to soften the adhesive. This allowed me to slowly and carefully pull the bezel of from the screen.

In the beginning, I took it to the repair shop where they told me that it could be due to back light. But after discussing with you, I decided to change the inverter first as it was cheap.
Regarding "Choose what closing the lid does", I am already doing that but no success.
Are video cable and Display panel cable same thing? Please give me ebay link for it.
And what actually is back light? I saw back light cables on service manual. Are they same? How do I change back light?
