Thank you for your reply Manjunath.  I had already tried that and it didn't work.  It still doesn't.   I can not dim the exceptionally bright screen.  Any other suggestions???

Easy,

Go to Device Manager, (Computer>[mouse right  click]>Manage>Device Manager).

In the category "Display", select your Generic PnP Display and uninstall it, then force windows
to detect hardware changes, througth the computer icon at the window top bar.

After windows notification, saying that your display it's installed again, give it a try with fn+[screen F key].

i hv installed a new windows and could not able to adjust the screen brightness........was there any drivers required for that? how to adjust the brightness?

HP Recommended

When I get to the display screen and click "Adjust brightness" I get the screen for Hardware and Sound -> Power Options.

When I try to type Display -> in the search box I get the search function.  (I can use this to get Display, but I wind up with the same error).

Is there some way to type the -> in your message to allow the use of the search box to get to Display Brightness?

HP Recommended

The menu I get after the right-mouse click does not have Manage as a choice.

WOW!  Thanks.  Nothing I tried fixed the extreme screen brightness until I uninstalled and scanned for hardware changes reinstalling the deleted monitor file.  Now the two brightness controls work perfectly, F2 and F3.

Thank you!
