Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

Zian6,

I sent mine in for repair and they replaced the entire motherboard, drives, fan and heat sink. Bought the unit in september and had the problem immediately but had to wait until the end of Oct to ship it off to get fixed. They were able to fix and turn it around in a week.  I still haven't given it a serious workout but I've played the games that caused it to instantly over heat and they played with out overheating for the couple hours I was testing things. I do have a good cooling wedge under the laptop though.

If you want to have 3D and a great screen resolution I don't know what your other options would be than this unit and then just ship it in to get fixed the second it over heats. If you don't need the resolution the Envy has or the 3D, get something else.

My son has a DV7t and that's not had any issues at all since we got it 9 months ago is is a very nice machine.

Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

I have been a loyal HP fan for many years.  Worked in a few shops that were HP and was always happy with their product and service.  That being said, this laptop is making me sway.....

From day one it was plagued with the blue screen graphics card driver issues.  No updates or fixes worked for this for about the first year of ownership.  It was a major PIA when trying to work on things and then out of the blue, bluescreen.....

Now the over heating issues...  If I dont have it raised at the very minium 2 inches off a completely flat and clear surface, it will last about 5 mins and over heat.  And I am talking about a smooth counter top or my polished glass coffee table.  Also should mention I am running the extended life batt so it it raised in the back almost another inch from normal height.

Mine over heats so bad that one night I was working on something in bed and woke up with a burn as I mentioned ealrier in this thread.  It was next to me on a stand that I made and had minimum 2 insches clearence underneath(and the extra clearence from the batt).  I must have rolled and rested my arm on it and woke up to a nasty burn and blister.  I now have a scar on my arm.

Support contacted me after I posted.  They asked how I was and how my arm was...  The lady was nice, but after that was out of the way they ask if anything is melted on the laptop. No...  So then proceeds to tell me to blow it out with air.  Same story as everyelse has received. Spend $1800 on laptop that gets so hot I cant rest my body on it to work.  I cant even lay my hand on it to type if it is not elevated and then I can only lay it on there for so long before it is way too hot.

I'm buying another can of air and give it one last cleaning. I have been in IT for many years and have had many laptops and have never seen something so bad.  If this doesnt fix it no more HP for me and will never recommend one again.  High performance laptop or not, there is no reason to get so hot.  With so many people complaining, I think HP needs to come forward and realize they have an issue on their hands and it is not a fluke.  But like someone mentioned I am sure they will wait for warranties to run out and then tell you "Too bad, so sad!"....  It's funny cause I have a 17" MacBook Pro at work with a quad core and it barely is warm to the touch....

Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

Weezykid,

That's pretty hot. Anyway, I totally agree. A ferrari does overheat!! and like you said the macbook pro 17 does really get that hot and it's slimmer so none of that bul**bleep** about performance parts in a small shell. Just like you, I used to like HP but with my Envy 17( Envy stands for envious of the macbook pro) getting really hot just internet surfing, 6 fixes that really didn't fix anything. I'm pretty much done. Just wish that I could get my money back.

Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

Just to put this in a little better perspective... I have an infared temperature gun and took some measurements.

The left side of my machine on the top along side the keyboard where you place your hand to type, i have seen temps as high as 133 degrees.  To give you some ideas on what 133degrees feels like, I microwaved a bowl of crea of wheat for breakfast for 2 mins, stirred, then two mins.  When I took it out I could barely touch the top of the bowl because it was so hot.  We have all experienced this before.  I took at temp reading of the top edge of the bowl where my fingers were and it is around 140-145  degrees.

I would just like a true fix...  Or HP to say that there is an issue and do something to make up for it.  The PC at times is unusable because it is so hot.  And one of the main culprits of PC parts dying is HEAT..  So after all this time of the PC getting so hot, it is probably shortening the life of the PC.  So in turn we paid alot of money for a PC that we cant use as we should and that probably wont last nearly as long as it should due to poor design/engineering of the cooling ducts.

Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

Oh and no offense Jeroi, but I feel the Ferrari reference is a bit of compparing apple to oragnes.  A Ferrari is basically race car dressed in a street car platform.  A machine built to withstand the rigors of racing that someone is trying to drive in bumper to bumper traffic.  Sure it will overheat because it was originally designed to be driving 160mph on the highway in Europe.  It really wasnt designed to sit and not have air flow around it at idle speeds for long periods of time. It was meant to go fast....

Our HP's are designed with the components to be high performance and multi-tasking...  They are design for high loads of multi-threading programs and many running at the same time.  Yet we cant even open the simplest of programs such as normal internet surfing at our table without overheating.

If Ferrari built a car to drive fast and when you were driving it fast and it overheated, then they would pull the design before it ever hit the streets and redesign it so it does what it is supposed to do...  But our laptops cannot do what they are supposed to do because they overheat even during the most simple tasks.......

Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

Hey, just send it in if it's still under warranty. I sent mine in a month or so ago and they replaced most of the guts. New motherboard, BIOS, fan etc. Maybe even new drives. So now it works like I would expect a $1800 laptop to perform. Been playing games etc for hours and hours at a time and it never over heats anymore. I do keep a pretty good cooling wedge under it when playing games with a lot of FPS though.

Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

hi all . I bought this laptop and shipped to India . I was xited abt this laptop bt not for long . after 45 days of use i started facing overheating issues , and it went so bad that it made my motherboard faulty and my laptop stopped working . i dropped my machine to the nearest servise center in Delhi, India , and it took them another 45 days to repare it and give it back . This product ripped $2150 from my pocket . The main problem I'm guessing is the AMD Graphic card , because when i run my machine on a power saving GPU it never gets heat up no matter what i do , though it dosen't give the same performance as AMD , but still . HP needs to work on the graphic card .

I'm also thinking that i made the biggest mistake of my life buying HP product .
