I could only say that if you really want gaming, go with Desktop. HP has the best laptop specifications when it comes to gaming, but the only downfall is that they heats up very easy. Especially if you are on intensive gaming.

HP Pavilion DV5..
and still working perfectly..

Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

Nothing but problems with this laptop. My DV6000 runs faster then this piece of garbage. I've sent it in for repair and they replaced the fan, heatsink and thermal glue. Still runs at 200F with the laptop sitting high up on a docking station and fan sounds like a hair dryer. Worst investment I ever made with a piece of computer hardware. Wish I could have returned it long ago. Any word if they will ever recall this thing? Or is the Envy Spectre going to live up to it's name "spectre: a mental image of something unpleasant or menacing". The Envy line has been unpleasant for sure and after getting burned by it the word menacing fits well too. They sure know how to pick a good name. I envy people with laptops that don't suck.

Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

Totally agree with Steven Swanson. It is a piece of ill-designed garbage. I fried two more eggs on mine today. Two overheat lockdowns every single day, even on an air-fan-cooler-pad. HP need to be well ashamed, more so for their denial that anything is wrong (ie silence). Trading standards ought to force them to recall it as a mis-sold kettle.

DO NOT BUY THIS COMPUTER unless you like cooking on one.

Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!! (optional solution)

This is good to know about Artic Silver thermal paste. I may have to do this if HP doesn't come through on the warranty. I complained today that after repair it still has problem and they said they would replace the motherboard, but all the did was replace the fan, heatsink and thermal paste. I'm 99 days out from the repair. They only give 90 days warranty on the repair. I was escalated to PULSE so waiting to hear what they say about this issue.

Yes my son burnt himself on this laptop, the right side gets ridiculously hot and in my opinion is a fire hazard, I was contemplating phoning HP {Content Removed: legal discussion} if they do not replace the laptop with the new 2012 model that as far as i am aware does not suffer from these heat issues.

It should not matter that I am out of warrenty, this is simply not on!

Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

HI,

there some step that can be useful for you try to get lastest update for your video card try to make full cleaning from inside your laptop because when the laptop become dusty you will se decreasing in performance and more heating.

i hope that can be a useful thing for you,

Re: Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

Yes, I burnt myself. You only do it once. From a legal standpoint, there's no scar and you don't exactly dash for a camera to take a pic. It's like a scald. My first experience, being used to having a laptop on the bed without a heat problem, was realising that it had made the blanket red hot. So I do think there's risk unless it just shuts down. It has also damaged the laminated surface of a table top, until I bought a fan base. Now, I can't buy a fan for every external place I use it.

How much evidence do HP need before doing a recall, warranty or no warranty? They surely know.

Oh right, legal discussions are not allowed, I was not aware...

I just find it very fustrating that not ONE member of the HP staff has even achnowledged this problem and I believe the common conencious is just to ignore the problem and it will just go away.....disgusting.

they will blatently NEVER issue a recall unless they are somehow forced to by an outside body...Its pathetic really...

Also  abood_88 thanks for the advice but I have tried these steps MANY times before, it is not simply a user error, there is an inherent problem with the thermal design of this laptop which is not fixable (short of physically modifying the case).
