No, it's the real thing I think with a name, asking for serial # etc. It's a real Case anyway. I used to run customer svs for somebody else (and NOT laptops :-)

Another thing we all need to do is start leaving negative feedback if you purchased this product online. I gave 1 star rating on Amazon.com where I purchased my laptop along with this review.
Nothing but problems with this laptop. My DV6000 runs faster then this piece of garbage. I've sent it in for repair and they replaced the fan, heatsink and thermal glue. Still runs at 200F with the laptop sitting high up on a docking station and the fan sounds like a hair dryer. Worst investment I ever made with a piece of computer hardware. Wish I could have returned it long ago.
It looks like the Envy Spectre is going to live up to it's name "spectre: a mental image of something unpleasant or menacing". The Envy line has been unpleasant for sure and after getting physically burned by it the word menacing fits well too. They sure know how to pick a good name. I envy people with laptops that don't blow hot air like this one does.
This isn't just my experience. Read this HP forum post to see all the problems people are having with this laptop:
[...]
HP should perform a recall on this before someone gets third degree burns.
I got this comment on my review.
ScottB says:
Dear Steven J. Swanson,
I am very sorry to hear of your experience regarding your Hewlett-Packard computer. If you agree, I would like to discuss this issue with you further. Please send me an email with your contact/product information or any case numbers to {Personal Information Removed} Please also include your Amazon username. I look forward to your response.
Regards,
Scott B.
Hewlett-Packard Company
So send Scott an email too.

Go to YouTube and search for "HP ENVY 17 Review". Give thumbs up to all the comments that talk about the heat issue. People are still buying this laptop. We must save them from getting burned!

Well I have the same trouble with my envy 17 3D, and guess what this is my second laptop beacuse the first one I returned because had a terrible problem with heat, but the things are the same but I managed to live with it by now. First when I use the typical applications like office or just the internet explorer I use the Intel graphics it will make your laptop running cold but when you need xtra power change to the ati graphics but remember that the fan in located in the left and it must be free ventilated with that the laptop will run fine. I had troubles, serious troubles when I used the eye finity in crysis 2, my laptop last just and hour and a half and then the message appeared.
So careful with powerful games if you play those ones use a cooler base or keep the fan ventilated

I've managed to live with this laptop for about 18 months. If you have the chance to return it DO IT! Don't compromise your life to live with it. If you can't return it then keep sending it back to HP until they fix it. Don't buy their story that high performance laptops just run hot and you have to invest in an air conditioner and something to prop it up off the table and not use it on your lap.
My DV6000 CTO could get zipped up in my backpack and survive a bike ride to the coffee shop in 100 degree weather so can my IBM Thinkpad. This Envy 17 I have to keep the fan ports exposed to open air and get my car A/C blowing really cold so I can make it to the coffee shop. Then I have to sit inside in the air conditioned shop, because if it's 80+ degrees outside the fan spins up like a hair dryer and the CPU performance gets slower and slower until it eventually does a shutdown. In fact I can't even sit next to a window with the Sun shining on my laptop or it will overheat. This is a piece of garbage. I'm tired of managing to live with it. It's supposed to help me manage my life. I shouldn't have to manage it's life.
If HP gives you that story that it's normal to run at 80 degrees C then ask them why the Envy 17 Spectre doesn't get that hot. I've heard rumor that they fixed the problem on the new Envy 17 (2012) Spectre, whatever it's called. Let's force them to fix this one.

Yes I think the new 2012 model has a lot better cooling design, tried a disply model out when in a shop and it seemed to be running nice and cool ![]()
I'll send scott an email, they need to re-issue all the pre 2012 models with the new ones, and like people have said at the end of the day it is not a massive cost to them and would win them much consumer support.....
I want a laptop that won't burn me!

I think what they are afraid of is the people who have been physically enjured by the laptop. The liability extends beyond just replacing the laptop, but that would make the majority of us happy for sure. They want to make a case that consumers are using the product correctly. That 80 degree C temperature is normal operating temperature and it's our fault for no buying coolers and keeping the vents of the bed and such.
Check this out regarding i7 temperatures. Found this on Toms Hardware.
"ok, you guys were right...i set the multiplier up to 24 and it was at 3.2Ghz. Didn't run orthos for very long (like 20 minutes) but the warmest the cpu got on eleet/cpu-z was low 50's.... "
Granted this guy had a desktop computer, but it was 3.2GHz in the low 50C temp range. My 1.6MHz cores are running at 920MHz 80-90% of the time. They jump up to 1400MHz for about two seconds and then back down to 920MHz while the temps range from 70C minimum to 97C maximum. It used to get much hotter, but with the BIOS and driver updates it just gets slower instead of hotter. I can't have sunshine on it or it becomes unusable. Even inside a nicely chilled coffee shop. There's no way I could ever use this laptop outside on a sunny day at the park unless it's 60 degrees F outside.
