What programs are you using to show the heat? Where can I get those?
I sent my laptop back to HP for the 3rd time. Supposedly they are replacing everything that has to do with the video. They said if this does not fix the problems, they will replace it. I think even if this does fix the issue, it's just going to be a reoccurring issue after some use. It's generating too much heat, and has inadequate cooling. But as long as it works, I'm happy. Just waiting for the Fed-Ex guy to get here now :-)

If I may suggest, when running games, use something that limits your FPS. If you let it run as fast as it can, it can and will overheat your graphics card and processor. If nothing else, it is worth a shot.

This is specifically for the person playing WoW...
I'm in the same boat. I found a "patch" to the problem. In-game, adjust your video settings to limit your FPS. By default, the game was running 60 FPS for me. I adjusted both sliders until I was running at 50 FPS. The performace is still fine (screen is not choppy at 50... I can't even see the difference). Palm area still gets very warm, but not unbearably hot like it did. Since it is the graphics card which is overheating, you have to limit the work that it has to do. Unfortunately, as gamers, we want performance... so there's a fine line between getting your desired graphics from the game, and not wanting your hand to hurt
I do, however, find it ridiculous that HP would market a notebook which has a component that overheats to the point where you can get 1st degree burns while using it. (yeah it was so bad, i had to wear a long sleeve shirt while playing the game, just so i didn't get burned... thank you HP!)
Hope this helps some! Happy questing!

You can read in this forum: contact HP support for help. I did. It is useless. They are clueless. I bought a laptop cooling system that cools it from beneath: does not help at all! The eny 17 is a piece of useless trash when it comes to ANY 3d application that uses the graphic card. Up to now (april 2011) there is no solution. So here is a warning: SAVE the money and DONT BUY THIS LAPTOP!

It's been more than half a year since I've posted this, and I've got no responses from anyone that works at HP.
Quite disappointed about them, all they see is money, but not willing to solve customers' issues.
I'll tell my friends(plus new friends I'll be meeting in the future) not to buy any HP computers, coz they are just jokes with their overheating issue.
I don't know what to do with my Envy17 but I've stopped using it for over 4 months, I can't play any games on it and the only thing I could do was surfing the net....WITH a 17 inch laptop.....God...I'm so failed..

I, like the original thread user play WoW.
I figured a machine that costs £1.2K should be able to provide adequate gaming.
Unfortunately i figured wrong.
The laptop overheats - to the point where its unbearable!
Ultimately the laptop i was sold is not fit for purpose and will therefore be returned under the MANY consumer goods rights people in the UK hold.
I have tried every fix / patch going and still no joy.

I have a Envy 17 1090eo with 720Qm, HD5850 mobility (1Gb DDR5) and 2 x 500Gb 7200rpm HDD. I only game at home, where the laptop is on a Zalman ZM-NC 3000U. At home I use keyboard/mouse, external speakers and a 23" 1920x1080 screen.
My workaround for the heat issue, is to buy a Silverstone SST-DS221B, extern dual 2.5” HDD Raid0/1 enclosure with eSATA and a OCZ 120 GB, 2.5” SSD Vertex 2 E Series SATA II. I then installed the OCZ in main driveslot (under right hand) and installed the 2 x 500Gb 7200rpm HDD in the Silverstone SST-DS221B (Raid0). Clean install with Win 7 Ultimate 64bit on the SSD.
When I play Witcher 2 on high settings (no vertical sync), I get max 85 degrees with GPU/Mem OC 500/1000MHz.(active fan). Games are on the raid with only savegames on the SSD.
I have a Dell Inspiron M301z, so the Envy 17 is more a desktop replacement for me. In the future I buy a desktop for gaming.
