Envy 17 overheating is bothering me!!!!!

So I logged a call .. Hows this for a fix..  

STEP 1: Uninstall MS ACPI Complaint control method battery from Device manager.
 Click Start --> Type Device, click Device Manager under programs.
Double click on Battery section  Right click on MS ACPI Complaint control method battery, clcik Uninstall, restart the computer.   

STEP 2: Install the BIOS Update.   ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp50501-51000/sp50600.exe   INSTRUCTIONS:  Open the website, Click Download, Click RUN to install it.  Click on Start when it asks to enter the Product Id and version.     Please reply to this e-mail if the issue persists.

I noticed there was a graphics driver update that I installed last night via the HP support tool. Need to test it out and see if that made any difference now.

So has ANYONE got a working fix for this problem? Sounds like its been going on for a while but they keep selling these boxes and nobody has gotten it repaired/fixed by sending it in to the shop over and over.

this is NOT an actual fix but probably just a way to try to force a reduction in performance on the cpu and/or gpu so that users cannot push the hardware which basically goes against any reason to buy this machine from HP --> Not to mention the ridiculous locked INSYDE BIOS on this machine which doesn't allow you to change boot order to boot off a secondary drive if you decide to install one!  The simplest of things to allow access to in the BIOS, HP does not allow!  You have very little control over much of ANYTHING in this BIOS!!!  That's another reason NOT to purchase this machine!

A real fix would be a redesign of the thermal solution on this laptop which unfornately I have learned that even in the newer models hasn't helped and that the Sandy versions run just as hot or hotter.  By trying to copy the Macbook pro's design, HP has failed in the cooling department.  It is nice to have a thinner, lighter notebook but only if you can actually cool it appropriately.

I sent my Envy 17 3D in recently for service and HP stated "the overheating problem has been reproduced during our tests" and then they proceeded to replace the tiny little fan they have which is trying desperately to cool the SINGLE heatsink/heatpipe assembly in this laptop which sits in the top left corner.  They put the GPU and CPU chips next to each  other and expect a tiny little  fan to cool the single shared heatsink/heatpipe solution from these chips which run way hot!!!

The fan replacement did nothing to resolve the issue and after checking temps, the laptop is still running as hot or hotter than it did before I sent it in!  It is a complete joke of a cooling solution and the techs know it.  I cannot play games on this laptop or do anything intense.  The frickin machine overheats even doing simple things like installing a program and/or decompressing files.

If you don't have a cooling pad with this machine, you are simply waiting for the machine to fail one day.

Utlimately it is just sad that HP released such a machine which looked great on paper but fails to deliver because they overlooked pretty much the most important thing they needed to do with this design -- COOL IT PROPERLY!!!

I am still contemplating on what I am going to do.  I am torn because I wish HP would simply admit their mistakes and offer me a suitable replacement machine that IS cooled properly (and with at least a few more options available in the BIOS if they are going to lock it up like this!! -- users are more sophisticated these days -- stop treating everyone like newbs!).  In other words, I really don't want to have to take drastic measures to get my money back -- I would rather HP take care of me as a client and make me happy.  I would really like to have the machine I envisioned they designed.  The one that not only looks good on paper, but actually performs well.

Nope! Bios is right but doesnt work on the Laptop - they are going to replace the fans / heatsink.. will see

{Content Removed: legal discussion} since they are basically just trying to drag things out until everyone is out of warrenty it appears. Buying one of these machines from HP is apparently no different than buying something from a snake oil salesman in the 1800's.

Mine started overheating pretty much straight out of the box when ever I'd do anything that used the graphics card.  Also made the laminate on my desk bubble up before I got a cooling pad under it. I bought a Coolermaster stand with 3 moveable fans and that had helped some but apparently only when you keep the room temp below 72 degrees.  I'm going to add a desk top fan to blow at the back of the machine and under the stupid cool to see if the added airflow will help. I guess I could find a large block of ice to sit it on but then there'd be condensation issues I'm sure!

My son has a DV7t I bought him this spring that cost me about half what I paid for this Envy 17 3D and he's not had a single issue with that. So HP CAN make a laptop that can actually work. Here I figured they'd have just improved on that box for the Envys. Guess not.

Apparently all the complaining here does nothing. Anyone with an issue with this box please email me your experience and contact info. {Content Removed: legal discussion}  Maybe we can at least force a full recall on these things.

Hi,

I've had the same problem with my Envy 17. Using a gas duster and blowing long and hard in all the openings underneath seems to have fixed the problem. The processor ran at around 100 C before and now is at 70. Try that before anything else.

I was about to buy this laptop but... I found this thread and heard about overheating.. So i'm not sure weather to buy this Laptop or not? Should i buy it or not? If so i buy it, is there anything to prevent it from overheating and any cooling device that i can buy to prevent it from overheating problems? Please answer..

AnonymousHelp! Really get a cooling fan!! When you buy a car the dealer doesn't tell you that it needs a fan!! This product is just a terrible design!! If it was designed properly then there would not be any need for anything to make it work and last.  The issue with the heat is plainly due to a bad cooling design and HP should replace every single unit out there!!!!

Do yourself a favor. DO NOT buy an HP Envy. I had mine fixed 2 times and replaced, then the replacement got fixed 4 times!!!

My average temperature just replying here is 70 degrees celcius. Seems high to me. Fan is very audible, like a hairdryer.

The battery life on the regular 6 cell is about an 45min to an 1 hour. If you do anything like watch a video, the lefthand side get hot enough to actually burn you!! As for having to buy an extra cooling device well that's absurd.
