I have updated to windows 10. At first the battery charged just fine. Now it will discharge but not recharge on its own. If I take the battery out and put it back in it will recharge. Checked the driver for the battery in Device manger and supposedly it is up to date. Once I get it charged it will run the laptop but when I plug it back in no charging.

So I decided to chech out if I needed any new drivers other than the one mentioned. The HP support site said I needed to update my Bios.
I followed the steps to do that. The Battery icon on my task bar says it is charging and will take 8 minutes to full charge.
I'm hoping this has solved my battery problem.

I’d love to help!
Follow below steps to fix this issue.
Reinstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager.
Here is how you do it.
Step 1: Click the Windows “Start” button and right-click “Computer.”
Step 2: Click “Manage,” then “Device Manager.”
Step 3: Click the “Batteries” section. A list of devices will appear.
Step 4: Right-click the “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” device and click “Uninstall.”
Step 5: Click the “Action” menu item and “Scan for Hardware Changes” to reinstall the driver.
Restart the computer and the issue should be fixed.
Let me know how it goes and you have a good day ahead.

Thanks for you help.
So I went through the steps that you listed. I also went thru the steps to do a hard reset of my computer by turing it off, unpluging my computer, taking the battery out, holding down the power button and then restarting. Neither action has solved my problem.
My computer is at 91% recharged (plugged in, not recharging).
It always recharges after I take the battery out but then stops and will not start charging again unless and take the battery out and place it back in.
Very frustrating. Moocow

Hi @moocow
Thank you for posting back.
Yes, bios update usually fixes many such issues. Please test the computer and see if everything works fine.
If any other questions arise, please feel free to write back to me.
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead.

Hello, @dennisbrain
Thanks for reaching out! I'd like to help 🙂
Did you try to run a hard ware test to determine any hardware failure? If not, try to run an extensive hardware test and check.
-
Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
-
Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second.
-
On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
-
Click Extensive Test.
-
Click Run once, or Loop until error.
I would further recommend you to test and calibrate the battery using the HP PC Diagnostics UEFI.
Go to http://hp.care/2cMZFxJ and perform the tests under “Testing and calibrating the battery using HP PC Diagnostics UEFI (preferred method)”. Make sure to do the test for both battery and the adapter.
If the test passes, then try the steps below:
- Click the bottom-left Start button on the desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.
- Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.
- Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Battery” – Right-click and choose “uninstall” on all the entries.
- Once all the entries are removed from battery, restart your PC.
Let me know if that helps!
Good luck 🙂

Hi Dvortex
I have tried all of your suggestions and the battery report said that the battery needs calibrating24.
I followed links to HP support and tried the battery calibration but got the following prompt
Automated Battery Calibration is not supported on this system.
Many thanks for all pf your help, but I am still in the same situation.
Is ther a way to do a manual battery calibration?
Regards

Hello, @dennisbrain
Thanks for the update!
There are steps to calibrate the battery manually. Go to http://hp.care/2whcLLO and follow the steps under "Manually Calibrating the battery".
Let me know how that goes!
