I'm trying to locate a faster CPU to upgrade this computer without causing a cooling problem. Can anyone find a list of CPU's that will work with this unit?
Thanks

This is your CPU now.
Intel Core i7-2670QM 2.20-GHz (SC turbo up to 3.10-GHz) processor (1600-MHz FSB, 6.0-MB L3 cache, dual core, 45 W)665116-001
This is your max upgrade. "Looks good."
Intel Core i7-2860QM 2.50-GHz (SC turbo up to 3.60-GHz) processor (1600-MHz FSB, 8.0-MB L3 cache, dual core, 45 W) 666175-001

From: http://ark.intel.com/products/53476/Intel-Core-i7-2860QM-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_60-GHz
going from your current 2.2 Ghz to this 2.5 Ghz CPU will cost $568 US.
To me, that is a *LOT* of money for a speed-up of 2.5/2.2 ==> (2.5*45) / (2.2*45) ==> 112.5/99 ==> 13% faster.
It is an "eight-way" CPU (4 processors, with 2 threads per processor).
Are you using software that uses all 8 threads?
Instead, spend $100 to $200 on a SSD (Solid State Disk-Drive) to make input/output much faster, or $50 to $100 to add more RAM to your computer, so that it less-often needs to "swap" to the disk-drive.
Use the Windows "Task Manager" or the Windows "Process Monitor" to look for any "bottle-neck" in your current system, before spending any money.
Both CPUs have:
* Memory channels: 2
* Supported memory: DDR3-1066, DDR3-1333
So, be sure to use two same-speed, same-size, sticks of the faster RAM, for best performance.
Your computer supports up to 16 GB of RAM.
The original disk-drive was 5400 RPM. You might upgrade to 7200 RPM, if you don't upgrade to the SSD.

$86 bid at the moment 17hrs to go.
And others at $172 or best offer.

My Ebay team listed a bunch of i7's today but not the one you need. "Sorry"

Mdklassen,
I understand what your saying and yes doing it that way would be cost prohibitive. My laptop now has 16mb's of Ram, a Crucial MX300 for Win 7 Pro and programs as well as a Crucial MX300 2TB Data storage drive. I probably don't max out all four cores very often but the faster CPU will give me a little more headroom for the apps I run. Plus, Fast is Fun.
I'll wait until I find a good price on Ebay and upgrade then. I'm in no rush.
Thanks
