118 pages !! When I'm done reading this I'm going to charge myself $50/hr.

Thanks for your advice and assistance.

Well, my story is going downhill fast.  Jason @ HP has just indicated that he can't help with the problem with my disintegrating connectors for the laptop screen hinges.

Well I went thru the appropriate pages to open the back and found a screw missing from the left hinge. I replaced the screw and it seems to be working although I wonder if I shouldt have put some dry silicone on the hinge.

Anyway, thanks for your help. I'm sure I will refer the the manual again.

Hi All,

I too own an Envy which now has a defective hinge which in turn is 'cracking the case' everytime I open/close the screen.

@Huffer - Please could you post a link to the service manul for the following model:

HP ENVY TouchSmart 17-j103ea Notebook PC
Model #: F5D55EA

And would you know where to obtain a replacement hinge within the UK?

Thanks.

Thanks @Huffer for your prompt reply.

On looking at the service manual and the replacement hinges I realised that a self-repair was beyond my capabilities. I've swapped the HD for an SSD easily but the hinge replacement is another level!

I recevied a quote from a third party repair specialist for £95 but before going ahead I read this entire thread from page 1 and saw the user @Pjs2 solution to the problem. I tried it and within 1minute had fixed the problem 🙂

So I recommend to anyone with a hinge problem to first try prying off the rubber foot closest to the problematic hinge and if the screw is loose then tighten it!

To be honest my screen feels more sturdy now than when I bought it in Jan 2014....

@glad to hear this solution worked for you, @Saints_FC. It pays to read all the posts in forum threads!

However, it's important to note that @while this solution from @Pjs2 may work for an HP17 ENVY laptop, it will not work for an HP 15 TS ENVY laptop because the hinge mountings are different.@ Check the manual for your particular laptop -- links to both have been posted here by @Huffer -- to see how the hinges are attached and whether a simple screw-tightening will work. Good Luck!

P.S. In my case, I had to get my HP Envy 15TS laptop hinges, fan and and top/bottom cases replaced, because once the left hinge broke there was no simple fix. I am being super-careful with it now and checking the case screws weekly to make sure everything is staying put.

Regards, FasterEddie
