Pavilion 17-e020us
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I am looking to upgrade the RAM and hard drive on my HP Pavilion 17-e020us laptop (these are the first upgrades it will receive).

I have 6 GB of RAM, and would like to upgrade to the maximum supported by the computer, 8 GB of RAM.  Which RAM chip model should I buy (besides DDR3L - I know that much), and where can I buy it from?  It would have to be a 4 GB chip (the computer is 6 GB, one 4GB chip and one 2GB chip; I will swap the 2GB chip for a 4GB chip to make a total of 8GB).

I am also looking to upgrade the 5400 RPM Hard disk to a Solid State Drive.  The SSD should be around 500 GB.  Which models are compatible with my laptop, and which model do you recommend?  Also, to what extent will upgrading to an SSD speed up my computer and improve its performance?

Thank you to all who help me on this.

Here is the Service Manual:

Manual

See p. 6 and 49 and 54.

The memory can actually be upgraded to 16 gigs. 2 x 8. Upgrading to 8 gigs is a good idea, however. For most people 16 gigs is overkill. The correct 4 gig module is this one:

4 GB (PC3L, 12800, 1600 MHz) 691740-001

http://www.amazon.com/HP-691740-001-1600MHz-PC3L-12800-memory/dp/B00CI08FX4

As for an SSD, you can install any 2.5 inch wide SATA SSD. I recommend a Samsung Evo 850

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-75E250B-AM/dp/B00OAJ412U/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&...

The amazon link has 250 and 500 and 1 TB versions. Othe SSDs are cheaper, and I have had good luck with OCZ. Stay away from the Crucial MX series.

The difference with the SSD will be night and day. There is no better upgrade money can buy.

Hello, and thank you for your help.

If I can upgrade my laptop to have 16 GB of RAM, I would like to do it (Here is where I found that the maximum supported by the PC is 8 GB).  Could you please send me the Amazon link for an 8 GB RAM chip that is compatible with my laptop (I would need to buy 2 of these for a total of 16 GB)?

One thing I did notice is that in the service manual, on page 6, it says that the maximum I can upgrade to is 12288 MB (12 GB), not 16 GB.  Are you sure that I can upgrade to 16 GB?

I will upgrade to that SSD.

Thanks again.

Yes it has breen reported here many times that 2 8 gig modules will work for 16 gigs. It stands to reason that if it can take 12 gigs (8 + 4) it can also take 2 x 8.

Specified 8 gig module:

8 GB (PC3L, 12800, 1600 MHz) 693374-001
