HP Zbook 15 G2 (i7)
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My new work computer is an HP ZBook 15 G2 (i7 processor). Great machine, love the screen, getting used to the keyboard.

It came with the 230W adapter, which is approximately the size and weight of a small child. When I'm in my office, it's in the dock, but I carry this thing to like 7 meetings a day.

If I got a 90W slimline adapter, would it work? I understand that obviously it's not going to be able to provide as much juice as the 230W adapterzilla that the machine came with. I'd be OK if it just ran the laptop, or even just significantly extended the battery life instead of running it and charging it at the same time.

Hi,

HP ZBook 15 G2 is a series of many models/products with many different configurations therefore  I can't answer your question because its requirement may vary depending on what is inside. 230W is for the docking station but 90W may not have enough juice. You can use the following chargers:

Power Supply

External HP 150W Slim Smart AC adapter

(167.0 x 82.0 x 25.4mm)

External HP 200W Slim Smart AC adapter

(172 x 96 x 25.4mm)

Awesome, thanks! You're correct - I don't have a 230W adapter, I looked and I have a 200W. The 150 looks to be only a little bit smaller. If I use a 90, will something bad happen (e.g., the adapter overheating or catching fire or somesuch?)

Hi,

Heat may build up and for start it may be smart enough to tell you: don't use it. The following image shows one example when I ordered a machine few years back (not same situation here, just FYI):
