Hi,

 

The HP boot test says the hardrive is failing and I need to know what type of hardrive(s) this machine is capable of handling.

 

Is there a webpage that says what harddrive (and possibly other upgrade info) for this device?

 

Current HD - HDD 640G 5400RPM SATA RAW 2.5IN

I'm sorry to hear about what happened with the drive, I know how unpleasant such a thing could be...

 

As for the replacement unit, you can take a look at the Manual of the product and see the list of compatible types of drives you can use on page 44 - basically any 2.5" 9.5mm should do the job. For a particular HDD model, you can check WD Blue which is meant for everyday usage:
http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ee85pv

 

Also, you can use the detailed guide there on how to replace the HDD too. Here's the link to the manual itself:

Lastly regarding your Recovery question, you can take a look at this KB article:
