HP Compaq 8510p
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

Dear all,

I would like to upgrade my HP Compaq 8510p.

I have a Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 installed. It is quite fast, but I would need to increase the RAM. Unfurtunately, it only supports 3GB. I searched the web and found the T9600. Similarly the T9700 and the Q9100 have a the same Sockel (P) and were suggested here: http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_2_Duo_Mobile/T8300_(Socket_P).html

On the other hand I read, that the Quad might not be supported by the motherboard, which im my case seems to be called 30CS KBC Version 71.36

My BIOS version is the 68MVD Ver.F.15

I would be greatful for any help concerning this question.

Thank you.

Alex

Here is the Service Manual which answers all the questions:

Your Manual

See p. 24. Top listed processor is a T9500. Quads are not supported. Other dual core CPUs like a T9900 might work but you are best off to assume the Manual is correct.

The laptop can only support 3 gigs of RAM because you are running a 32 bit OS. It is capable of up to 8 gigs but it uses DDR2 and 8 gigs of DDR2 is very expensive; well over $100US.

Hello,

thank you for your quick and helpful response.

Do I understand you correctly, that an 64-bit OS update would let me use the 4 GB installed and up to 8 GB as well?

Yes that is correct. But 32 bit cannot be upgraded to 64 bit. You would have to do a clean new install.
