Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
I currently have 4gb of ram, and I recently took a 4gb stick out of another laptop. When I add the new RAM, Windows stalls. The BIOS reads the new RAM (8 total), but Windows refuses to load. The new RAM is <4gb 1Rx8 PC3L 12800S - 11 - 12 - B4> From what I've read, the max speed is 10600 on this computer. Is there a way to throttle back the RAM? BIOS is locked and not helpful. My questions are: is the speed the only issue? Is there a way to resolve this? I would like to solve this legitimately, but if there are other options that may void the warranty, I would be interested in hearing about them as well, purely for academic purposes.

Thanks!

The speed is not the only issue, it is the voltage. Your original memory was 1.5 volt and this new memory is 1.35 volt. It can run at 1.5 volt but prefers not to and you did not provide a part number for the module but if it is high density (4 black blocks per side) it is not going to play nice with the original HP module. Do yourself a favor and get memory from one of the good vendors, Crucial, Kingston, etc. that is specified as compatible with your specific model. The first generation Intel Core models like yours are very memory-finicky.
