I want to leave my old HDD (1TB) and buy a small additional SSD (maybe 256 GB) but I read that it might not fit the (apparently existing) slot which is apparently designed for a TV tuner?

That is right. The ability to use an mSSD was only present beginning with Intel 3rd gen Core processors and yours is 1st generation. That slot you see looks like a general pci-e slot but it is specialized likely for a WWAN (cellular) card only.
