Hi i have a Hp Envy m6 1178sa i know it has a msata port is there any limitation to what size msata that i will be able to fit , i would like to use the msata to boot from and my normal hdd as my storage this hdd is sata and not ssd i would be greatfull for any info thanks

Can't do it. The mSATA on that model is used to accelerate the main hard drive only. If a 2.5 inch SATA drive is presentt he system will not boot from the mSATA. So the mSATA cannot be used as the OS drive. The mSATA is no faster than a 2.5 inch SATA SSD, so that is the recommended hardware to install for best performance. If you put in a 2.5 inch SATA SSD you can just remove the mSATA drive.
