8460w Fan Running at Full Speed with Computer Off

I just got an 8460w and it has an annoying issue: The fan runs constantly at full speed when asleep or shut down and plugged into AC power. I have the latest BIOS and have tried all the settings, most obviously the one about keeping fan on when AC is plugged in. I contacted the reseller and he told me this is normal for the 8460w, but this seems strange as it's distractingly loud.

I talked to HP support and they told me they would send out a tech to replace the motherboard and fan, but I'm waiting on confirming since I could just get a new machine from the reseller.

So, is it normal for the fan to run full speed when powered off or asleep? If not, would you recommend having HP replace the mobo or getting a new machine?

Thanks

No it is not normal and I would get a new machine while you can.

Re: 8460w Fan Running at Full Speed with Computer Off

Thanks for the reply. I decided to have HP come replace the system board on site since it's covered under warranty and the seller offered me an attractive partial refund. I imagine it should solve the problem.

Is it possible that the system board takes over and uses its own fan controller when the computer is off? If so, I could imagine one of the temperature sensors going bad and the controller keeping the fan on constantly.

No if it is off it should be off. I have frankly never seen this issue, but there is always something new.
