I just bought an HP ENVY 6-1120sq which has an 128GB SSD on it. Is it possible to add an additional normal HDD drive to it?

They really do not want you messing around in there....the Envy 6 Ultra is a closed system. However, it is configured to use a 2.5 inch wide but thin 7 mm "standard" hard drive and has a slot for a smaller (physical size) mSSD, which is what you have. Here is the Service Manual:
Getting the mSSD and a regular hard drive to play nice together may not be too easy. In many systems the mSSD is used as a "cache" drive to speed up the main drive. In yours it is used as primary storage.

In other words it will be better to use an external HDD. Right?

Better, no. More feasible yes. If it is opened at all you lose the warranty. A 64 gig flash drive would make a big difference storage-wise and is easy to carry around.

USB 3.0 flash drives are plenty fast but perhaps not as fast as an eSata external drive.
